Trough sink w/ double faucets...how small can you go?

We're renovating our main bathroom in a 1920's house, so with not much space to work with and a budget we're trying to keep under control, I'm hoping to install a drop-in trough sink into a reasonably priced vanity with an epoxy sealed wool counter and counter mounted double faucets.

I'm wondering how small one can go with the basin without having a situation where water splashes onto the counter every time it's used because the faucets are too close to the edge?

I'm planning to do single hole faucets that are very low to the sink and mounted about 18" apart, so would a 30" basin be too small?

(Also if anyone has advice on the overall plan I'm open to that too!)
