Wow, looks like the Ponderosa Ranch on the old show Bonanza! Time for a change. I would start with painting all the wood panelled walls and window frames (advice given above re. primer 1st is key) One of the nice thing about wood walls is that you can hang a painting anywhere you like. Change the lighting to something modern and brighter. See how you like it at that point. Personally I would paint everything as the beams look too small to be interesting and the wood panelling isn't that interesting.I would go for a rustic Swedish country look which would be not that much of a stretch with your great rustic house. The furniture layout looks like it could be tweaked a bit as well. And just curious about the stair railing? Is there glass in between the posts or is it really empty space?

There have been some great suggestions, but I feel like we’re working in a vacuum here. What is your vision for your home? Although this has focused on the knotty pine, whether to paint it, and what flooring to pick, so much of the process is about the style you want, the furniture you have (or will buy), the colors you like, and the budget. I could go with light oak flooring, old Oriental rugs, nautical touches, red and navy and off-white, but I could also pick a dark green marmoleum floor, Morris chairs, black painted bookcases, a more rustic vibe, and plaids. How do you see it all coming together?

Should I paint the trim a white-white color to match the trim on the doors? Yes. Because color hierarchy. When you use color to group like elements together, you're color-coding the environment. It makes the space easier to understand consciously and subconsciously. In other words, the envelope of the space is cohesive, congruous - it makes sense. Some would call this a "design rule" and maybe they're right. If they are, then this is one color design rule I prefer not to break even if it's well understood.

The video had dark wood trim much darker than the floors and looks much better lighter and brighter. The original posters wood trim matches her light oak floors and looks nice but it is her house so if she wants to paint it to make her happy that is up to her. Or she can see if a wall color will help. My bedroom's headboard does not make me feel good so I am going to make my change also. I love creamy and bright walls and that is why I feel a headboard for me without the dirty looking too busy headboard would make me happy. I am still wondering how much canned lighting in my ceiling would help me feel happier.
