Olga: I would agree that in your zone this structure could be overgrown.... in Zone 4 maybe not...it's really tough in my zone (3) to get year after year incremental vertical growth with most Canadian bred roses unless your winter protection is somewhat elaborate. Does anyone have a photo of a mature Quadra in Zone 4 that illustrates it's growth potential? Perhaps Ramblin Red would be a better candidate although it isn't as hardy. I posted this photo because my experience with typical support structures purchased in local nurseries is that they usually aren't strong enough to deal with larger roses in the wind...this one will...and you can change the width and height to accomodate the rose(s). I'm in the same situation as Gardenerzone4...I've run out of walls and fences to support my climbers...quite a dilemma...so the roses have to go out in the open and how do you support them?...I also like the effect of mass plantings...it gives me a bit of insurance to get the desired effect...so in my climate, away from the walls and fences, I know I should establish more plants than a rose grower in warmer climates...i.e. to get a similar desired effect.

Fence costs are catch-as-catch-can. If the landlord neighbor didn't want to pay for the fence when it was built, nothing you can do about that. You either pay for the fence and make it yours, or don't put it up. If you want a fence that bad, you pay for it. It's certainly not fair to demand payment later when someone else moves in. It's very common to set back fences 6" in my city. I don't know if it's a requirement. I do know it's common for adverse possession to only apply if someone is squatting without permission. IF the fence regulations already require a setback, I can't imagine an adverse possession case getting any traction based on the fact that the fence was built to code. Even if there's no setback requirement, you may still be protected if you specifically allow someone to use YOUR land, as in giving a neighbor permission to use the 6" strip. Or, if you specifically prohibit it. "Squatter's rights" to land usually apply when the neighbor used it and the owner knew about it and did nothing. Our neighbors accidentally put a block wall raised bed a few inches past the line. They moved. The new neighbors brought it to my attention and I said they didn't have to remove the entire wall on my account (it's only 4 feet long anyway). I gave them permission to encroach on my property with their wall. It's still my property and will remain so. Of course, it should really be in writing because if it ever goes to court, there's no documentation, but in my case it's a de minimus condition, and we get along fine with the neighbors.

I didn't realize that you were trying to increase the height, I thought you were trying to block the view through the chain link. I can't see that a section of anything ~6ft tall would be held rigid enough to look decent and stay straight by tie wrapping it to a chain link fence between posts. You might try fastening some pressure treated boards hosrizontally between the existing posts and then screwing your vinyl lattice sections to them. Other option is to simply put up a parallel fence new posts and all. HTH

Hi floral, The thing is, these long runners have not yet developed attachment thingies so they fall away from the fence and would never attach. I need something to hold them against the fence until they self-attach. Twine is possible but maybe not. I'd have to thread the twine between slats (some are too close to each other, most I can get it through), then go behind the fence to tie it off. I could staple the twine to the back side of the fence. Maybe that will work, but even so, I'm not sure I can get the twine tight enough for the runner to be in contact with the wood. The runner would have to be held up by a leaf cluster, so it would sag away from the fence just below the twine. I assume the vine has to be actually in contact with the fence, that any gap at all would mean the attacher would not grow. I thought there would be a product out there just for this type of thing.
