built-ins and a partial old school rock fireplace

here's a tough one. this is the office/guest/library/piano room. I'm installing built-ins on either side of this partial 50s fireplace. we are into square no fuss edges, this ornamented mantle has to go. There will be molding connecting the built-ins and the rock. The door and built-ins will be all white the stone will be painted white or light grey.

the question: do we build o box above the fireplace.so it's all flush with the built-ins and the rock? do we leave it as a partial fireplace (meaning no rock or wood above the fireplace) and replace the mantle with something boxy, or do we go to the trouble of removing this rock and going all flush all the way up and if so what material?

(pardon the mess mid construction!)
