please help with my Rhaphidophora tetrasperma
Got this mini monstera 2 weeks ago and there was a unfurled leave that turned black. There was a grow point and I thought a new leaf would come out. Today, I saw something black inside the shoot and decided to open it and found this. Next to the black part is seemingly a leaf? Not sure if I should wait it out or cut the stem off to reboot?
Please help!

3 years agoI watered it twice since I got it two weeks ago. I only water the plant once the first 2 inches are dry. It’s in front of a south facing window, but because I have a patio some trees in front of the windows, most of the light is indirect bright light.
I checked the roots and it seems to be fine.

Comments (12)I wouldn't put it in a smaller pot, just better soil. With a good quality growing media you can have the plant growing in any size container. If you don't want to start from scratch go buy a small bag of potting mix and bag twice as big of orchid mix that is wood chip, charcoal, lava, that sorta stuff and mix them together, you want it 1 part soil, 2 parts orchid mix. You can build a better growing media but this should work fine. What you're trying to do is have a mix that you can pour water through the pot and it will drain through and not leave it soggy. Water it again when the soil feels barely damp but don't let it dry out completely, You'll get familiar with it after a while and just know when it needs it, it isn't as complicated as I make it sound. You could also grow it in passive or semi-hydro using Leca or long fiber sphagnum moss and then you'd keep it sitting in a couple of inches of water all the time and just change out the water every three or four weeks....See MoreMonstera Experts, a little help for an amatuer, please?!
Comments (33)Purple, how did you know my allergies are making me a snoring machine lately? LOL. I guess you really are always there ;-) I'm broke right now, so my issue is definitely more 'what do I have to work with here.' I still haven't gotten around to redoing that pole I made. Busy day yesterday. I think I may have the time (& extra hands) to do so today. My hubby has been laughing at me for carrying my plants in & out, in & out. I may have to bring them in again, depending on how the forecast pans out. So far, we've got a 10 day forecast with overnight lows above 50 (FINALLY! for the first time this spring!) but they keep dropping the forecast a degree or 2 at a time, so the lower nights, I'm just going to have to keep a close eye on it. I typically stay up later, anyway, so by 11 pm, I usually have a good idea if it's going to drop low or not. My home thermometer usually ends up with several degrees lower a reading than our Mesonet station (which is 10 miles north & up on a ridge, while we're down in a valley). I just really hope that my plants do well outside this year, it's made me sad to not have a place for them to put them out for the last couple years. Comments (15)I don't see geniculum on any of the petioles in the photo. R. tetrasperma petioles are much more slender and longer in relation to the leaves than M. Deliciosa. M. Del's have a fatter Stem (vine) and the petioles are larger where they attach to it. Also, at least in my plants, The Rhaph's petioles are "D" shaped in cross section and the Monstera's have a somewhat flattened oval cross section. The leaves can be 12" or 25cm which going by that giant sized UK electrical outlet in the photo seems about what the bigger leaves would measure...See MoreRhaphidophora Tetrasperma
Comments (11)Hello Michelle, Yes my tetrasperma is now growing quite well after a bit of a hiccup. I didn't notice that during the rearrangement of what we call our tropical house the main stem had been broken and the plant, although growing was producing tiny leaves.
