Exterior Nucedar Shakes and Allura mix?-residing/windows

1) replacing the scallops with shakes or board and baton? If I do the shakes do I do the whole front center portion of the house and then also do the whole left side of the house OR stop, as they did with the scallops?. A few questions I am dwelling on are:

2) Would like to use Nu

cedar shakes...as they seem less fake...but would like to do the other lap siding areas in a fiber cement (Allura/James Hardie). Is that possible?

3) My friend has eliminated the center half circle window and the 2 half circle windows on the left of the house in order to update the house.

4) and finally Color

Ugh...any thoughts would be most appreciated

If updating is the aim the removing the arched windows is a great ide so is removing the shutters and no shakes at all just nice siding.

hi there, and yes we are using the weathered gray nichiha with eldorado stone. i think i posted a pic a few weeks back for you. either way, the stone is not up yet. it's one of eldorado's stacked stones in a color called olive grove. i prefer the stone (obviously!) but i have seen gray, shingled houses with red brick which i thought were stunning. i think it depends on the home really. do you have any drawings? this is the front elevation showing the stone placement. and this is the house in progress; we need a lot of grading:

It's a nice looking cape. I'm seeing too much of one color. I think I'd look into beefing up the window trim on the dormers. I'd look into brightening the paint in the porch area to make it more of a focal point. I'd think about painting the body of the house a brighter color to get more contrast from the roof. I wouldn't touch the siding as it looks fine. If I wanted to spend more money, I think I would go with a different garage door style. I can't see the lighting on the front porch, but perhaps that can be brightened, and I'd look into different materials for the front porch and steps to make them more interesting than the concrete. The rest can be done with landscaping and plant selection and placement.

In trying to avoid the jigs and jogs:) guess we ended up with a large flat side to the house! There is definitely a pergola going in, as we need something to shade us from the summer noon sun. I hadn't decided if it would be a separate structure away from the house, but if it was attached, it would definitely break up the wall a bit. There will for sure be a deck. It will start at the door, and extend to the back of the house. I also like the idea of making the dining room window more of a feature by making it a bay or a slight bumpout... (the dining room window is the large center one on main floor.) The windows may appear haphazard from the outside, but they are definitely not haphazard on the inside. Not much we can change there.

I need help with exterior color choices.

We are remodeling our lake cottage in New Hampshire. For the siding we are planning on Allura (https://allurausa.com/blog/color-spotlight-plunge-pool) cement board 5” exposure textured clapboard in Plunge Pool color (green grey). The sofits and gables are/will be painted brown and the window exterior casings are a bronze/brown color. We were thinking of making the corner boards and window/door trim the same plunge pool color, but our GC is questioning this choice. He thinks we should go with a brown. We will have a brown walnut garage door and will be staining the front wood door to match garage or keep it natural like the fir posts and beams on porches. There will be natural color shakes over garage door. For the front deck railing we are planning to have natural fir hand rail with dark balusters. We are trying to keep away from any white or beige. What is your opinion? Would it look okay to have the front of the house with all the windows the plunge pool and the rest of the house brown? I am including some current photos of the house.

You have a lovely home and I actually love the scalloped siding and the butter yellow colour. There are 3 things I would change though. I would get rid of the half moon windows and would perhaps replace with rectangular transom windows. The second thing I would change is the colour of the shutters and I'm thinking white. The third thing I'd change is I would beef up the architectural moulding on your house (corner moulding, window moulding and maybe add some decorative moulding to the top of your two large peaks, etc). More pronounced white moulding and the white shutters will really bring out that cape cod architectural style.

Love the oval windows flanking the front door.

I have been trying to find examples of siding treatment that looks like what would be called judges panel in the interior on an exterior photo. I only found one so far and it is just a small bit. But I would do this in the gable areas of your home rather than lap siding or shakes.
