What can we do to fix this look? Add window? Paint brick/siding?

Half-brick / half-siding house. Seems to be missing middle 2nd floor window at the front. Blahhh cream and brown colours throughout exterior (and interior).

Any design ideas and mock images/ examples to make this look more modern and desirable?

Lose the shutters and maybe something decorative between them. It just looks a bit odd as the windows are set so high and a bit squatty. Unless you want to replace the windows with casements like the ground floor. No more siding is needed honestly and don't paint the brick.

millworkman, thank you for your reply. I may not have been clear. The exterior paint job is actually almost $6k. My budget above is in addition, for whatever else I might be able to fix before the house gets painted.

So I like the idea of getting rid of the vinyl siding and adding lots of wide white trim boards. Found this pic of doing a two-toned treatment using shakes. Thank goodness they have it in vinyl now. I like the look of the prairie style windows and the dark stain on the deck. I’d get rid of the lattice and do a square lattice but create panels so it is broken up. Since you have a white railing, I would do the frame of the panel white and then either stain the lattice to match you deck and steps or the lower house color. Or just all white but I think that may be too much. Also notice how the panels are lined up with the deck posts.

Taking the siding to the ground might not be the best idea, My husband put a coating on ours (think it was called Fibercrete) that made it look more like poured concrete that block. Then we just left it the concrete color. If you can't reasonably change out the curvy part of the window, you should be able to take out the lower part and put in a smaller height picture window to raise it off the new, higher floor. If you can't get brick to match to fill in the few inches left by raising the window, You could probably do something creative with trim (maybe a window box?) to cover it. If not a window box, then paint the lower part of the new trim as close as possible to the brick color and get creative with your landscaping to hide it.

My house was almost identical to this but we had a central window- it went to the master closet

In your case I think it looks fine- yours isn’t a central hall Georgian. I would push the exterior more modern- lose the shutters, get a new modern front door, Maybe replace the wood next to the door with ipe for a feature wall.

Remove the shutters and paint the siding a nice color not cream This is a nice color with brick and I think would work very well on your house.
