Advice, please—what shrubs would you recommend for this situation?

I need to move some roses that the deer are enjoying far more than I, and I’d love some suggestions for shrubs to replace them. I’m in Marlborough, Massachusetts, zone 6a. The bed has goodish but not great soil, and it’s moderately moist except when we get the summer droughts that are increasingly frequent. The new shrubs would obviously have to be deer-resistant, and they shouldn’t be huge. I’d love white-variegated or silvery foliage and some flowering in shades of blue, purple, pink, or crimson, but I realize all that may not be possible. Any thoughts, fellow gardeners?
