Need help with front porch and door

Hi,

I am planning on installing new siding and windows to this house and need help with the front door/porch. The door is not centered, need advice on how to balance it. I think I will add shutters to the large window, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Darling house. You can purchase doors with a single sidelight. I'd like that better than shutters if you can affort a new door. And then you would be rid of the storm door. If you can't manage a new door, could you get a full view storm door?

Hi,

Thanks, I will be putting in a new door, but because of the vestibule, I cannot add a right hand side light. ARGH! All thoughts and inspiration gratefully received.

Chiflipper is right. Repairs first, then cosmetics. Easy and inexpensive to fix the railing(s). As for the stairs, I would go in this direction for cosmetic changes or really gray treads and white risers.

So I would absolutely keep the rug. I would do a cooler color on the wall like a gray green or gray blue. Get a runner to go between the doors that coordinates with your existing rug. I would add real baseboards but if you can’t just paint a 4” wide white band above what you have to fake it. Add a narrow console table with an open decorative front to hide the air conditioner. Paint the door to the house charcoal gray. I found these curtain panels that to me could mimic artwork to hide the vertical blinds. Then add a seating are there. Keep the bench and mirror as is. I don’t have photoshop so excuse my poor mockups lol.

Then I would suggest a largish wall mounted light and maybe a bench to visually balance the weight of the door. If you want shutters, get operational ones, not the fakes. But I think a light might work well, plus be welcoming.

I’ll add new door, plus full glass storm door, the house is in near the Grand Tetons, so it get very cold in winter.

Here is another suggestion.

I would put three ceramic pots in different heights to the right of the door, in your favorite color. Add flowers in the summer and evergreen branches in the winter. Pick out a beautiful elongated outdoor light, add to side of door. No shutters.

Brilliant ideas, thank you. I am not sure if I can hang a swing, although I love the idea, I'll have to see if there is enough support in the ceiling. The house was built in the early 1920's so it is full of mysteries.

It all the siding is painted the same color as the posts, it will be less obvious that the door is off centered. I would paint the porch decking a light gray and the ceiling haint blue.

If you can't add a swing, maybe a bench.

thank you, the siding is being replaced with new vinyl siding, possibly a grey colour, gosh I hope it doesn't "date" too much, as its life span is long. You are so clever with the mock up of the house. I am not very tech savvy.

Thanks to all replies. If you could suggest colour for new vinyl siding, trim and front door, I would welcome your suggestions. Keeping in mind, the house is in S.E. Idaho (very outdoorsy/mountain lifestyle.
