kwanzan cherry vs chanticleer pear for Toronto

I want to plant a new tree in place of a rotten Christmas tree . I am deciding between chanticleer pear and the kwanzan cherry tree,for the end of my backyard. I would like someone to suggest if they have had any experience.i am in Toronto if that helps .

Apart from disease and pest problems generally typical of rose family trees such as both of these two you need to find out what particular pressures there might be in your region. Some bug or blight that consistently spoils cherries and pears for instance.

Otherwise as with all flowering cherries there is a good probability of a given 'Kanzan' specimen coming grafted on nuisance sweet cherry roots. Unless a point is made of finding stock that is cutting grown or grafted on different roots.

Also 'Kanzan' actually produces a medium sized tree, as in 35 to 60ft tall. And becomes spreading with age. So if you don't want those kind of eventual dimensions it won't be right for the spot.

As for the pear we've been having kind of a wet early half of the year in my area - and the million Callery pear cultivars in local parking lots etc. are peppered with large ugly leaf spots - maybe pear scab, I haven't checked. So in your rainier eastern summers this might be a regular thing.

bboy, that's a good way of putting it..."fashion item". Some overplanted plants are just popular plantings while others are the "ultimate accessory" for your home. I have noticed that there are a lot of trees around here that are overplanted because people are led to believe that the tree is the latest and greatest. The Siberian Elm seemed to have been planted in the past, down in the Southwest and in the Midwest, because people were sold on the tree. It seems the various Maples, such as Red Sunset and Autumn Blaze are becoming that way, as well. The parking lots around here are full of those Maples. I have also noticed that there are trees that people feel is a "must-have" in their yard because that's what's en vogue. The Japanese Maple is the first one that comes to mind. When you go to the "Street of Dreams" events, you will notice that just about every house has several JM's in various forms there. Hinoki Cypress and Junipers (cut into pom-pom's) are others that I see a lot at these events. Again, they're not all bad...just too many of them. How true about the dry PNW summers. I was very surprised when I moved to Portland from Albuquerque 13 years ago. I figured that there would be no need for watering your lawn/plants up here, but I was WRONG. By mid-July, you need a jack-hammer to get through the dried clay soil. Most years, I dont even bother watering the lawn...it's no use. I water my plants in the planting beds and heavily mulch them, but that's it.

diane, I thought I sent in a response but apparently not.... I understand what you mean by the WOW effect - which is why I brought up the point that these trees will flower only for approximately a 1 week. I thought perhaps you could choose a couple of varieties if possible, to get trees to bloom at different times and therefore stretch your bloom period. The greenhouse Judy mentioned might be able to assist you select the trees suitable for your zone. Sunita, Bing Cherries will blossom but not as much as ornamental cherries. Many ornamental fruit trees will still produce fruits but these are not edible. I have an ornamental pear tree (chanticleer) which produce white blooms. The thing with trees that blossom, is that you have to be prepared to deal with the mess of rotting flower petals afterward. The thing with any trees of the apple varieties is that you'd have to be prepared to deal with mildew because it happens every year. My cousin has 2 huge trees that suffer from this yearly. Ianna

Ask this question on the New England forum also. Your part of MA has winter moths that can defoliate some kinds of trees more than others. There are a number of folks from zone 5 MA who visit the New England forum regularly and will chip in. I'd include a question about winter moth and other pest susceptibility in your post. There aren't winter moths in my area so I can't help with them, but I know that cherry trees around here are susceptible to a wide variety of pests and tend to be short-lived. There was a similar question there recently that might give you some ideas even though her size range started smaller than yours. You might want to consider whether you will want a mix of trees which will give you a longer period of interest and some protection from losing your entire shelter belt if there are disease or insect issues vs. having a more uniform look to your row of trees. You are making a good choice not to look at callery pears. They don't do well with the wet snows that often happen in New England. This is from last fall's Thanksgiving storm and the homeowner had to remove about half of 6 trees.

Thanks but we have been getting a drought here in Toronto recently. But from what I read th pear is a very hardy variety .

What it's like there now will have no bearing on what may happen during normal years going forward, after you have planted the tree - us being on the wet side this spring in our dry summer climate could still be a less damp situation than you have on your side of the continent even during a drier than usual period.

Read up more on the pear :-) It and all other varieties of callery pear have terrible reputations for any number of reasons - weak wood and poor structure highly susceptible to winter storm damage, unpleasantly odorific flowers, an ability to cross pollinate with other pears and spread weedily if not invasively, etc.

There are sooo many other better choices for a flowering tree!! I'd strongly suggest you keep looking :-)

Ditto to what people have said. I wouldn't plant either tree--so many better trees to choose from.
