Cherry Trees

I am in zone 5a Barrie Ontario

I recently drove through, Washing D.C. in the U.S. and just loved the blossoming cherry trees, that are everywhere there

Had been thinking to plant a row of same in my front yard, up by the road, but on my own property

Maybe three or four trees

What would be a good variety. I don't know much about the cherries produced and if there are reliably cherries produced

The idea would be mainly for bloom in spring

the ones you've seen are Japanese cherry blossom trees. A gift from Japan to the US at the turn of the previous century. There are 2 types I believe and they won't bear fruits. Blossoms will last for at least a week. These however thrive from zone 6 and above. I'm not aware of ornamentals that grow well in zone 5. However I won't say that it's not possible to grow cherries in your zone. Why not visit some established garden centres in your area to see what's suitable. By the way, you can choose weeping varieties or those that have an upward crown. Last, Japan also gifted Toronto with cherry trees and these are in High Park. I'd say if you plan to put in several trees, choose a couple that flower at different times so you get a continuity of blooms.

Thanks for the reply Ianna

I knew of the original cherry trees being from Japan.
I did not know that those particular trees would be most likely to survive in not less than zone 6

I would like to have the trees bloom at the same time no matter what period of time they are in bloom to have the affect on the street

The WOW , at least to me affect

Have not bought them yet.

Did not know we had some nice Cherry Trees in High Park of Toronto. Although I know there are some very splendid trees there

I bought a Lady Slipper Orchid the other day. Not sure just where to put it and if it might have a chance to survive or not

Definitely a bad graft with the standard cherry suckering. This happens to a lot of ornamental fruit trees. You'll have to cut the white flowered trunk off at the collar (just past where it meets the main trunk). It sounds like both trunks are the same size? That means this problem started as soon as you planted it. A picture would help a lot. Make a CLEAN cut on an ANGLE just past the branch collar. It is probably too thick to use loppers, so purchase a decent pruning saw (Lowes, HD sell these), and make a starter cut at the bottom of the branch, angling up and in toward the tree, then do the rest of the cut from the top of the branch, angling toward the bottom cut (away from the tree). The cut is on an angle to shed water. You must do a cut on the bottom first so that when you cut from the top it doesn't pull down and rip the bark along the main trunk, which can kill the tree. Do this now or wait until next year and do it in early spring before the buds break. Do not wait much longer, because right now the cherry will use it's energy to heal the wound, but if you wait until May or later it will have used most of it's energy in flowering and growing new branches and will not heal quickly at all. The standard cherry will grow about 20 feet high. Depending on the rootstock, it may even bear fruit. Standard cherries are hardy trees, and it will definitely end up killing your weeping graft if you don't get rid of it soon. As for it looking odd, don't worry, in a few years the weeping tree will grow to the other side with proper pruning. Right now the other tree is preventing it from growing that direction. Once it is gone the other side will start to thrive. The sun exposure alone will help a lot. Don't expect too much this year though, since it will be focusing its energy on healing.

Unless the parent tree was own root the sucker yours came from is the sweet cherry rootstock and not the named cultivar that was presumably grafted onto it. Either the rootstock seedling happens to be a yellow cherry as well or the whole parent tree, including the roots was the yellow cultivar. Sweet cherry is actually a weed species in this region and suckers to form groves on local wooded hillsides, where it even overtakes and overtops the native red alder trees often present in quantity on the same sites. It also crosses with the much less exuberant, native bitter cherry to produce a nearly fruitless, intermediate hybrid called Puget cherry. Some ~tall examples of the latter are conspicuous when in bloom, on undeveloped land between I-5 and Lakeside School (near Seattle). It is usual to have problems with suckering and bony surface roots with plantings of sweet cherries - perhaps all the more so when these are present as rootstocks for Japanese flowering cherries. All you can do is uncover the bases of the suckers and saw them away. If there are horizontal runners that lead back to the original planting follow these back to the parent tree and saw them off at their points of origin, pull the rest up. You don't, of course want to saw off normal roots of the parent tree - just the ones that are suckering runners like aspen trees and running species of bamboos produce. "subgenus" may be more appropriate (or maybe not, taxonomists have put both sweet and sour cherries into the subgenus Cerasus). All these different cherry species are very closely related, if one wants to consider them different species. This is one example where the line separating different species is not a clear one. It could even be possible to consider the different cherry families as subspecies. After all, if they can freely interbreed and hybridize with each other, can they not be considered members within the same species? (by this definition we could divide all cherries into only 2 groups: those with 16 chromosomes and those with 32) Or one could attempt to divide cherries into different families: Sweet cherries (P. avium), sour cherries, Black cherries plus Capulin native to the American continent (put into same group), and Asian flowering cherries. Perhaps better classification could be provided if taxonomists utilized multiple degrees of species relatedness/separation, because it is ambiguous whether some of the different cherries should be classified as entirely separate species or subspecies within a singular species, neither of which would be wholly accurate.

Hi Diane - I also live in Barrie and was looking to plant some type of spring flowering tree. I was at Bradford Greenhouse last week and they have quite a variety of flowering trees and shrubs. I am considering a Flowering crab as I have had them previously at another home and they are very nice. They also grow fairly fast which is nice too - then you don't have to buy too big a one.

Anyway - that was my thoughts.

There is a huge variety of cherries out there. If you want an eating cherry you should be able to grow the Bing cherry. My mom had one out here in central Ab. that fruited every year so you should have no problem with it.

Funny, I was wondering the same thing! There was a sale on cherry trees last week at Bradford Greenhouses...I didn't get it yet though.

Didn't know that those cherry trees in Japan will not produce fruit!

Just wondering...will the Bing cherry have blossoms that are similar to these japanese ones?

diane, I thought I sent in a response but apparently not....

I understand what you mean by the WOW effect - which is why I brought up the point that these trees will flower only for approximately a 1 week. I thought perhaps you could choose a couple of varieties if possible, to get trees to bloom at different times and therefore stretch your bloom period. The greenhouse Judy mentioned might be able to assist you select the trees suitable for your zone.

Sunita, Bing Cherries will blossom but not as much as ornamental cherries. Many ornamental fruit trees will still produce fruits but these are not edible. I have an ornamental pear tree (chanticleer) which produce white blooms. The thing with trees that blossom, is that you have to be prepared to deal with the mess of rotting flower petals afterward.

The thing with any trees of the apple varieties is that you'd have to be prepared to deal with mildew because it happens every year. My cousin has 2 huge trees that suffer from this yearly.
