Fire And Ice Hydrangea

Does anyone have experience with Fire And Ice Hydrangea. I bought some today at the nursery because they were so beautiful and lacy looking. I know that they will change color as the summer progresses but am trying to determine how big they will get. The tag said 4-5' tall, and I have read the same online....but have also read 8-10'. Would love to hear from anyone that has this particular hydrangea and how TALL / WIDE it is, and how long you've had it.

Fyi, this is at a MI cottage on west side of state where I have 7 other hydrangea varieties that have been growing happily over the last several years in the sandy soil / have no trouble through the winter.

It may be a lot bigger if it is in a happy spot. You should see my limelight it is at least 12 ft tall. Fire and ice is a very pretty hydrangea. I might need one of those.

Mature Plant Size: 96-180" tall (8-15 feet), 72-144" wide (6-12 feet)

Thank you so much for your reply frankielynnsie, that is what I saw as well. But because I also saw other websites mention 5' (and that is what my tag says), I am still hoping maybe someone who has one / has had one can give more info!

I fell in love with the white blossoms and burgundy stems, but if it is proven to actually be that tall, I will have to plant them somewhere other than where I originally planned.

The Limelights are so pretty, I have the Baby Limeights and think the green blooms are so perfectly pretty mixed with so many other varieties of flowers...you are lucky to have 12' of them!

Won't the magnolia bloom in spring and after that just be green leaves? So I don't think that will be much of an issue and I think quite a few shade perennials will work with the hydrangea. You mentioned liking Heuchera and those have many options for colored leaves - from dark to light. Pulmonaria also have a lot of leaf options to brighten shade. Rozanne or other geraniums should do fine and give you a long bloom time in the summer. I've heard that daylillies will do OK too but have never tried them. I agree about looking at more shrubs for structure in the area. We have (round) Boxwood in the shade and they are doing great but if you want something taller and more cone shape, you could check out Green Mountain. There should be some yews available too. Very soon, I am replacing my astilbes with Little Henry Sweetspire to hopefully give me more structure and longer color. There might be more options for your zone than we have here.

Doing a google search on remontant hydrangeas, brought me to this thread. I own 'Wedding Gown' & 'Pistachio' or 'Glam Rock' as its known across the pond. Both hydrangeas do not get huge figure about 3' X 3'. 'Wedding Gown' I have noticed, in our zone 7 winters w/o protection dies almost to the ground and emerges with new growth in spring. The plant blooms on new wood. I have not encountered 'die to the ground' with 'Pistachio'. Both are well behaved in a Northern exposure and a Western exposure in the shadow of a magnolia.

I love my fire and Ice. It needs at least 6 hours of full sun. Moist soil for all Hydrangeas. I am a designer and went to school for this 3 1/2years pt. Time. Mine does turn a beautiful fushcia in the fall every year. Maybe some that dont were miss marked. That can happen.

Size and shape of bed will be impacted by what you are planting. Most beds need to be about 5 ft deep to allow shrubs and perennials to grow. If you use the Jane magnolia for the left corner, make sure you allow enough room for it to grow. Do a google search and look at the images of that plant, you will see that it is a small tree, maybe 8-10ft wid and the same high. When I design a bed it is good to see the entire front. So that the left and right are balanced. Also Next to the entry, plant a smaller plant that will not grow as tall at the front door. I dont like big plants crowding the door. Plant your small tree on the corner, moving if far enough to grow to its mature size. So from left to right - Jane Magnolia , then maybe 2 or three hydrangae's (depending if their size is about 3x3 ) and next maybe a drawf hinoki cypress Chamaecyparis obtusa Nana ( stays about 3ft high) next to the entry. Some nice perennials are heuchra, and painted fern ( and As Amanda recommended Hostas and Tiarella) It is always good to start with measurements and some graph paper. Always read and understand the mature size of each plant, then plot out the plants ( at their mature size) on the graph paper. Once plants are placed - make the outline of the bed. You can keep them pruned down, it will just be an extra chore every year. If you don't want to fight nature you will need a spot that can accommodate it.

The US plant patent states 1.8-3 meters tall, so about 6-10 feet.

I would give it at least 10’. Plant tags often give an optimistically small size, often a 5 year size. Not a single one of my panicled hydrangeas has ended up at the smaller end of the size ranges given. I think I am in fairly ideal growing conditions for panicled hydrangeas, and my soil is similar to yours, sandy and acidic. I have a Fire and Ice, but it is in a garden that I have not been in for three seasons due to several serious family health issues keeping me otherwise occupied. However, life has finally settled some and I am now slowly getting the gardens back in line, so I will see if it has survived the total neglect. Based on my other paniculatas, it is likely fine.
