Question about h. June and h. Halcyon

I just dug up my June today, because so much of it had reverted to a solid blue. I separated the eyes of June and replanted them. Can I assume that the solid blue eyes are Halcyon? They are very hearty and I have another home for them.

Similar question about Ice Age Trail. It has lost all its streaking. Is it now Big Daddy?

One thing is you now have 4 different hosta . My June has one or two shoots that are back to Halcyon but so far never got it separated Ice age is a beauty. Hopefully some has stayed stable

Technically both could have sported but that's highly unlikely. In your shoes the solid blue out of 'June' is 'Halcyon' and it unfortunate your 'Ice Age Trail' has reverted to 'Big Daddy'.

I've had an 'Ice Age Trail' for well over 10 years and one year it developed a very nice shoot that was all medio-variegated. Way to go I thought. I separated it from the main plant -believe there were like 2 or shoots that were medio- and potted it up in its own 3-gallon pot. That was 2 years ago. Last year when things were breaking again I was horrified to not be able to find said medio-variegated IAT, I looked high and low and could NOT find it. I would not have sold it, it would have to be somewhere in the yard and the only thing I can think of is that when it came back up it reverted back to 'Big Daddy' and the only reason I even think that is because I seemed to have one extra BD....What a disappointment. What's left of the streaker is showing less streakingand I'll soon have to separate those shoots in order to preserve it....

The issue with vinegar, or any acid is when it combines with the base (alkalinity), it gets neutralized, but the product of that neutralization is salt. Since it obviously rains where you live, I would try to create a small system for collecting the rainwater, and use that to water your tree. Meyers are a little sensitive to pH and do best at soil pH of 5.5-6.5. Up to 7 (rainwater), they do okay; above that they need some special treatments. If you want to continue to use the vinegar method, at least put in the vinegar and allow it to stand for a while so that the salts will have a chance to collect at the bottom before using it for watering.

Question About Starting Seeds in H. Peroxide

I had the same thing happen this year with one set of seeds I purchased this year. I soaked mine for 3 weeks but then decided to dry them off, check to be sure they were not mushy or soft, and repackaged and put them back in the refrig. I check them frequently and they are still okay. That was over a month ago but I'm busy with other perennials now that I haven't tried to re-germinate them again. Some seeds are just buggers to get to germinate in the soak. If they are still hard and not soft, you can place them in damp paper towel/coffee filter, seal them in a baggie and place back in the refrig. I've never done it but heard others have success. Hi Cathy - while testing your own pH isn't recommended by the USDA guidelines the FDA does approve the use of litmus and pH meters, with some attached provisions, (edited to add - for acidic foods, low-acid and/or mixtures of low-acid foods are not included) for commercial sales. Your state and county guidelines for commercial sales should provide the rules applicable to you as they vary from state to state.. That said, for non-commercial use with Apple-Pear Butter (assuming no windfalls or Asian Pears were used) pH isn't normally a concern as the only risks are molds and yeasts. Many fruit products are canned without the addition of lemon or sugar and often the lemon called for is for color preservation only. Otherwise the fruits themselves provide the proper level of acidity for safe canning. Reduced Sugar or sugar supplement Apple Butter does call for a little longer processing time - 1/2 pints or pints for 15 min. in a BWB with the time adjusted for altitude. This really is an interesting plant that looks exactly like the picture posted however it starts out with a creamy center in the spring and then greens up. However the center is always smooth while the edges are puckered a little. I purchased mine from White Oaks. Ivory Necklace is a nice fast growing plant but it has a pebbled green center and a smooth white edge, so loses some of the character of its parent plant. Chris

I had a June that reverted last year. I did the same process and got a Halcyon out of it. I was happy to have it because I know it is a nice blue. Good luck separating the hostas out! :-)
