How difficult is it to remove a gas fireplace?

My wife and I are moving to a new home with a gas fireplace in the main living area. Growing up, neither of us have used a fireplace, and we’re thinking of removing it since it’s off-center in the room making it difficult to arrange furniture and a TV. This is our long term home, so resale isn’t too much of a factor at this point.

How difficult is it for a contractor to remove the fireplace and replace with drywall? I really haven’t heard of fireplace removal before. Anything we should be considering?

Removing a fireplace and replace with drywall is not a difficult task.

Do you have any thoughts about the hearth?

Removal and replacing will generate some dust, so consider dust control: plastic walls, floor coverings, turn off HVAC.

Pretty easy job.

If you are replacing the carpet, even less to worry about.

Consider what is behind the fireplace wall. When you remove the firebox, you may be able to free up some space on the other side of that wall as well.

Consider how it is vented. If it is a direct vent fireplace, then some patching will need to be done outside the house or the vent pipe will need to be blocked off somehow.

Gas line will need to be capped, so technically, a plumber would be involved, although it's something you can do yourself.

Really, depending on how that fireplace is installed, you can probably do it yourself if you are handy with drywall.

The fireplace isnt the problem, its the venting, they venting would most likely have to be changed, and then you would need to talk to the HOA.

OK, so I looked through the installation manual for your fireplace and the mistake that has been made is the black metal (access panel) should have been covered with drywall. Drywall can cover all of the black metal on the bottom and sides of this fireplace. The top must be covered with a non combustible material, which apparently is supplied with the unit. Did you install this yourself? Anyways, cut a piece of drywall and cover up that access panel as long as all of the wiring has been done. You can always access the junction box from above by removing the logs and burner. This is mentioned in the installation manual. Hope this helps.
