Marvin Windows vs Hurd/Sierra Pacific Windows - which is better?
Comments (75)Moisture between the glass would not be caused by poor installation. Rather, it would be caused by a defective manufacturing issue or due to some type of unusual situation where the normal wear was affected. For instance, extreme variations in temperature due to orientation or something going on regarding the interior of your home. I design and specify windows for homes in Florida almost all of them on the water or close by. Sierra Pacific offers a 30 year warranty on its 2605 finish and 20 year warranty on its patented Coreguard wood treatment and I would consider those windows. Andersen performs well too but they reduce their 20 year warranty to 10 years when on the coast. In my 40 year career, I have had great success with Andersen and SP and would run away from Pella if you are looking for an aluminum clad wood window. Just my opinion based on more than a hundred installations....See MoreMixing Marvin elevate and essential.
Comments (27)Wow! Those prices are pretty impressive. I only got one quote, but I guess I should shop around. I've been going crazy too deciding on windows. I wasn't happy with the Pella product at all, especially the fiberglass - it has a wood grain look to it and looked really cheap to me when we went to see a house that had it installed. Anyway, we have decided to go with Marvin, but can't decide between all four of their options - Modern, Ultimate, Elevate and Essential. Previous owners replaced original aluminum single plane aluminum windows with terrible beige Milgard vinyl windows. I wish we knew what the original windows looked like to get a sense of the style. I doubt they were originally double hung in this home built in 1978. They are LARGE and they replaced with cottage offset single hung with the lower half smaller. The seals are all broken so need replacing. Now we are racking our brains - Do we keep the single hung? Do we go more modern with top fixed and bottom awning? Or go double casement? ...ugh too many options! I'm also scared of going black on the interior although I always think it looks nice in photos. Your casements look fantastic!...See MoreAndersen A series vs Marvin Essential
Comments (6)I got to say that Andersen A series is one nice window. I really like it. The Elevate is ok, seems like the Essential with added on wood trim. But that Andersen is nice. I already purchased one Marvin Essential, I'll get it in and evaluate it. Maybe install it to see how I like it before deciding which direction I want to go....See MoreMarvin Essential vs Andersen 100 Picture windows
Comments (24)Just an update if anyone in the future bumps into a similar situation. Got the quote back on A-100 Picture window with Tempered glass. Marvin Essential is still 1.95x (down from 2.5x) more than A-100. All other window types (casement / gliders ) are in the same price range, with less than $100 difference between the two. @Lora P Thank you. You made a valid point, I will check on Elevate pricing for the same size. But what I understood for picture windows to be a standard size has to be <= 48 sq.ft for most manufacturers. These windows are required only on rear side with no other windows on same wall.. so might be OK to upgrade ( i guess !!) As much as I hate to mix the brands, switching to A-100 definitely will save few grand. Might have to look for other factors like Warranty etc before making a decision....See MoreK G
