There isn’t an obvious wall in the room to highlight by painting or by leaving as wood. The example you show is highlighting the fireplace wall by keeping that wood while painting the adjacent walls. Your situation is a bit different. A couple of possibilities occur to me. One is to lightly whitewash all of the walls so that the nature of the wood shows through but it brightens the space. The other is to remove the lattice work on the second floor balcony and change the railing to a different material. That would take a lot of the wood out of the room. Is there a reason for that space to be closed off from the living area below? Lovely space to be working with, by the way.

Isn't it amazing how you can have too much of a good thing. Here are some other examples that might broaden your options.

Since this is part of the other post for this space IMO you need to slow down and get some pro help. There is such a thing as too much of almost anything. IMO way too much woo already so if all the walls and ceiling are going to stay in wood then IMO you need flooring that is not wood and slate comes to my mind as good choice for floors. If you do not wan the hassle of real slate install you could do vinyl tile that looks like slate.BTW the flooring in the mock up does not work with the rest of the wood.

@pds290 the lattice upstairs needs to be either walled off or windowed as thats the master, I plan on adding a door there as well.

interesting idea of changing the railing. maybe darken it up to black at the least. I'd like to go darker on the rafter beams too

@Patricia Colwell Consulting yeah trying to get some help here to get me thinking in the right direction. I agrees the floors dont work well I just quickly did that in a generator to get rid of the carpet at least.

would like a light or dark blackish wood look good for flooring? I feel like I see a lot of cabin style homes with wood floors that look good. I did notice the windows and such are lacking any trim work. maybe trimming those out and some other ways to add accents on the walls and break up the continuous same color might help?

I'd do all walls white! your mockup is SO beautiful. the cool diagonal lines on the walls will be plenty of wow factor, I don't think you'll miss the wood tone at all. otherwise, there really is just too much wood going on. I also like your idea of darkening the beams.

I have ceilings like yours and all of the walls are painted (mine are plain old drywall). as they are, the ceilings darken the room, so I'm glad all the walls are light. it creates a good balance.

also, one of my favorite bloggers has a house like this, and she did amazing things to transform it. most walls are white, but some accent walls (such as the catwalk) are black. gorgeous.

@User thank you, I am a little scared to paint the wood but I do know its to much and the room would use some brightening. plus I'm a woodworker so I make a lot of wood pieces, which would look better on white than wood on wood I bet..

I love the windows in the house you posted. would really like to add a bigger window to that right big wall, not sure how big (havent seen the costs yet..) but here's some mock up ideas

here's the view of the woods. probably do some landscaping when I move in. seeing it with the bigger windows I'm leaning towards leaving that back wall with the window wood and doing all the other ones white?

I love your idea of putting in a big window, and keeping the natural wood around it would make a great accent wall!

one downside to big windows: bird strikes. I was looking into the issue for my own home and learned about UV window films with patterns that are visible to birds, invisible to us. just an FYI!

any thought on floor color? I was leaning towards a lighter wood, not sure what this would be like a oak/maple/elm? havent looked into actual floors just Pinterest stuff like this

many people recommended a slate floor but I'm not sure, and maybe that was before I decided to go with more white on the walls

not sure. I would either match the ceiling, or go a little lighter. but make sure they're warm. the mockup you posted looks like slightly cool toned.

our ceilings are about the same color as yours, and the floors are lighter. I don't know what wood it is. but it's original to the house and I like it.

it's kind of hard to tell the colors from the photo, but the flooring is akin to this sample below. warm enough to go with the reddish ceilings. I also like this color because it seems to be a flooring color that never goes out of style. it was original to our house.

The floor should be understated so the windows are the focus

wider planks in a finer grain

-Maple, birch, white oak or other local tree species that tends to the gray color

-stained very light gray.

Contrasting the floor color with the ceiling color will make the tall ceiling be a standout feature, bring the eyes upwards, and make the cabin feel more spacious.

the sample pics are beautiful, but the ceiling in photo #1 is lighter and a cooler tone than yours. your ceilings are warmer.

try getting some sample planks and see how they look IRL.

if you really love grey, go for it. but I really think that grey toned hardwood floors will never work with a warm toned ceiling. so mockup #6 would be the best bet. what's giving me pause is how it looks against that one wood accent wall. it's so hard to tell how it's really going to look in real life. DIY software is helpful for narrowing ideas down, but it's never going to get the color exactly right.

note: I'm not an interior designer. I'm a graphic designer with a good eye. I can help people with ideas and examples when they feel stuck, but by no means am I qualified to make strong recommendations. you have some really big decisions here, and you might want to hire a pro for this! if anything, they can do mockups that are much more realistic so you can get a better sense of the outcome.

@User yeah I'm not really in love with any of the mockups from that site, might try another to see. but yeah I gotta get some samples to see what would look good in real life. seeing it with the wood floor is making me think about painting the accent wall white as well so its not such a big problem with floor matching wall, since floor + white walls + ceiling is more separated.

The idea of painting beautiful wood makes me cringe. Sorry. Can you remove the lattice at the top of the stairs and install an open railing upstairs? Add a bright rug, taller lamps with LEDS, wider white drapes, Lighting makes a difference.

@tdemonti the house furniture is from the previous owner so it'll definitely look nicer with new stuff in it. the lattice upstairs is getting walled in with a door as well, not sure if I'm going to match the wood or do something different but upstairs is the master so want it closed off.

I'm with you on painting wood but its just so much, I think it needs to be toned down a bit to make the parts that are still wood stand out even more

a couple of suggestions I forgot to make:

1: you could do white peel-and-stick wallpaper and live with it for a while to give you a sense of how it would look.

or 2: drywall. more expensive solution, but it could be taken down if you regret it. downside is you lose the diagonal lines, which I think are fantastic.
