Exterior dilemma
Cannot for the life of me decide what to do with our exterior that is in need of painting. I want something classic and appropriate to the house style, with a pop of something. The trim on the house is so pretty, but gets lost with the current all white exterior.
Also want something that won't show dirt as much as white. Help!!

3 years agoYou have a lovely classic home that could stay white, but the landscaping is in need of updating. You could easily change the exterior color to this greige shown below which would help conceal soiling. Your roof is in need of washing. A bright white trim would certainly define the details of the home better since there is no room for shutters on the windows.
Those large yews in the front need to be replaced with much smaller and varied size shrubs.

The first think you should do is cut the yews down to almost half their height. It will look horrible for awhile, but yews respond well to heavy pruning. No bush should be taller then the bottom of the window, but I would keep them much lower than that. You could add azaleas, mountain laurels, and hydrangeas. I would add a line of variegate creeping euonymus. Ferns and hosta would fill in nicely. If that is ivy, I would get rid of it. It is a thug.

Comments (23)I would love something like shoji white but I’m not sure how that would Look against the almond. I'll take working with almond over stark white windows any day - so much easier. Can tell you how I deal with them. "Almond" is not the same color brand to brand so we measure the color of the windows. We use a Spectro 1 Pro, but a more affordable Color Muse works too. Settings in the app have to be Illuminant D65, 2 degree observer. One of the windows in the app will give you the hue angle of the Almond color. Then it's just a matter of finding colors in the same hue angle range. If you do that, post back with the hue angle and I can post a list of colors that fit. Comments (12)You are right to be concerned. The developer/builder trend of adding masonry from the ground to the window sills will make your house appear as if it has sunk into its foundation or the house is unusually short. Take a tip from the elegant houses of the past and do everything you can to make the ground floor appear as tall as possible. Will the ground floor be framed or a slab on grade? if it will be framed, bring the siding down to the top of he foundation and allow 8" of foundation to show where the grade is high and let more of it show where the grade drops. If you add stone veneer to the foundation, let the floor framing overhang enough for the siding to be proud of he stone veneer and avoid that awful detail where the stone is proud of the siding as if it had been added later. Be sure to use a stone cladding that can be buried. If the first floor will be a slab on grade, you can still achieve this appearance by raising it up. The details below represent the full catastrophe: siding on top of stone on top of concrete with the stone proud of the other materials. It looks like a spec builder wanted to emulate an elegant house of the past but couldn't resist saving a few bucks: "there's not enough foundation showing to show off the stone so I'll just stick some of it on the wall". 3 years agoI respectfully disagree with removing the yews and replacing with small new plants. That look to me screams new development 1990s. You have an established house and it deserves mature landscaping. I think trimming and adding more works better than starting over. I would Google 1920 landscaping to get ideas for plantings, roof and siding color schemes.
Here is a drawing from a 1920s home ad. This is the direction I might go in landscaping to maintain you lovely established home.
