tree/shrub id please

Hello all,

Found this tree/shrub growing in a neglected bed I was cleaning out. I was about to cut it but then took a look and thought the leaves were nice and the trunk nice as well - smooth and silvery. I will probably end up removing it, since the last thing I need is more shade, but thought I'd try to get an ID. Any thoughts?

It is Rose of Sharon shrub, Hibiscus syriacus. It is a bit of a pest farther south in New England, seeding around with enthusiasm, though not as badly as burning bush. In my area it is marginally hardy and the seeds don’t typically mature after the late season bloom.

Is it really?! Never would have thought that! Thanks, Babs. I will remove it then. I have noticed that they do have the tendency to be aggressive around here. And if you notice in the picture unfortunately there is a row of burning bushes there already (neighbor's, not mine). Plus it's in my yellow/orange/red bed, lol, and I'm sure it will be pink or white. Anywhere else in the yard and it might have stayed! I'm just trying to think where it might have come from. No Rose of Sharons in the immediate area.... although the funny thing is I just remembered that my neighbor used to have some, but now they are gone. I don't remember seeing them for some years now....

1. May be black cherry? Keys were bark and leaves borne on short spur branches. 2. Beautyberry--if so, this is considered invasive in Northern IL. 3. Definitely lilac, don't know specific cultivar. 4. Buckthorn--key id is alternate veination in leaves That's all I've got at the moment.

I also keep running into pictures that look like G. coulteri, but many pictures seem to vary a lot too. I guess it doesn't really matter much, G. coulteri is close enough. I guess there's a G. coulteri at Glendale xeriscape demonstration garden so I'll have to take some leaves from the question plant and compare side by side. Thanks much.

I figured this was sort of a 'free' tree that I could place somewhere else in my yard/garden for our summer shade. But after researching it a bit more, I think that would be a huge mistake. Especially the fact that I might not be able too plant much under it, and it would be near a patio, the mess itself would be a pain. Such a shame because it seems like a fast grower thats more of an evergreen. Oh well, I'll keep looking for something else and meanwhile remove this tree that will obviously encroach on my back neighbor eventually.
