Two Accts? Repeat My Question About Bonica and Low Grow Soft Pink Rose

(This is my real account, really... )

I need a new rose to plant in my deck box. I have Meidiland White in there now, and it has a good growth habit for the box (4 ft square box - but don't want a tall height rose), but the white isn't working for that spot.

I'd like a soft pink, like Bonica Rose. I almost bought Bonica, but maybe it grows too tall/high? It's my favorite color of what I've seen so far.

What would your suggestion be for a low growing rose (I don't know what category rose that is), that continually blooms, in a soft pink? It gets good care being up on my deck.

Miss Mary, I was the former nanadoll, but houzz eliminated her, and now my user name is my real name. I have no idea why houzz did such a thing. Are you having problems with being a double identity? As far as suitable roses for your container go, have you checked out the Drift series of roses? There is at least one pink one--I grow a bunch of the Apricot Drift and love them. They are as much pink as apricot colored in the course of the bloom's "life". I garden in dry, not Idaho, zone 7A. My experience with Bonica is that it would be too big in my climate for your size constraints. Just for a chuckle--I've grown Royal Bonica, a sport of Bonica for decades. Here it gets about 8 feet wide and six feet tall. A tad large for you, but I like this workhorse rose very much. Diane

Royal Bonica shows a darker pink than Bonica's pink.

I was going to suggest Bonica too, I don't grow it but I like it and it's easy to find. There is a mass planting of Bonica at my office park which surely get very little maintenance and always looks good. I love that it is covered in big hips for fall & winter. Not sure if there is much scent My two cents for own root vs budded in zone 5-6 NH/MA: I have some own root old garden roses that did really well this winter, better than most of my modern roses, but I can't call them low maintenance. I have one own root floribunda that did surprisingly well, Blueberry Hill. As for Distant Drums though, I think that is a zone pusher for Z5 and I'd say you want grafted. My Mom who lives further south (North-shore MA) put in two own root bands of Distant Drums last year and they grew very slowly. One didn't survive the winter, the other is a little twig. Mine was budded and even though it had considerable die back it's got surviving base canes the size of my thumb. Uncanoonuc has some roses by Ping Lim this year. I think they are part of the Easy Elegance collection. I got Kashmir & Champagne Wishes and I see they have a pink one called Grandma's Blessing. They are all own root, but of course they are fairly mature plants, not bands. What I read suggests excellent winter hardiness.

I had grown 'Indigo' for well over a year in a pot here - it grew and bloomed almost like a floribunda when cut after the flowers fell apart (which they did rather quickly in the heat, like within a day). It didn't have so much as a speck of anything on its leaves. When it arrived from California, it was sick looking and anemic - some warmth, good soil and food restored it to such good health I had to give it to my mother in Minnesota because I couldn't give it the bigger pot it needed. 'Marchessa Boccella' is spotless up north, and the blooms are absolutely charming - I don't think everyone is as particular as Patrick about mathematically perfect flower form. Some of the flowers can be extremely wide in favorable conditions. As others noted, it's supposed to be a hybrid perpetual, and it is certainly not a short rose. 'Rose de Resht' is a trooper, doing well in spite of black spot and crud (which we do get up north, by the way, so it isn't a latitude issue!). This one is also thought to perhaps be a hybrid perpetual of sorts; I don't know about that, but the China background is pretty obvious when you look at the plant. I have a supposed 'Duchess of Portland' at home, but I wonder about its identity because it wants to grow large and only blooms once a year. It isn't a plant I'd particularly recommend to anyone, if that's all there is to it. Carol, do you know which 'Rose du Roi' clone you're growing - the old one of commerce, or the "real" 'Rose du Roi' isolated from 'PananchÃ©e de Lyon' at Vintage?

Jim, I think you might as well cross Marie Daly off your list. I'm about two towns south of you on the Peninsula so my conditions are similar to yours, including the alkaline soil. I grow Marie Pavie here. While it is a wonderful plant in many ways, it does get mild chlorosis. It also wants to be about 5 feet tall and 4 feet wide, so it is a bigger plant than you have in mind. From what I understand, Marie Daly is just like its sport parent except in color. I also suggest that you stick to annual rather than perennial salvias as your filler plants. The perennials ones will be more difficult to remove once your roses get some size on them. I went down that same path a few years ago. There are a number of lovely drought tolerant annuals that will fill in nicely for you, and can be eliminated later once you no longer need them. Short lived perennials like lavenders and thyme can work, too. I'd keep away from aggressive selfseeders. They can become weeds. An example is nigella, love-in-the-mist, which self sews aggressively all over the place here. And beware artemisias. Some are thugs that spread by underground roots.

Hello there Miss Mary. I also think the drift rose series would make a wonderful rose for the area you have. They bloom a lot and stay compact. I specially love the sweet drift. I am not certain if it is a soft enough shade of pink. If you prefer something lighter, then the Fawn/Faun rose would be a wonderful pale pink rose. Petal pusher is another good one.

petal pusher has a medium pink color with lighter reverse. It is competing with sweet mint here and still manages to bloom.
