kitchen 'island table' ideas needed

We have about 42-43" between the sink wall cabs and the island, and about 36" give or take between the island and the pantry wall cabs. I think our KD had it reversed (or had the island more centered, I forget which), but we had them change it so we'd have more room on the sink side. We wanted to make sure we could walk past the DW with the door open (a big thank you to one of my bosses for that very helpful piece of advice!!!!). 99% of the time it's just DH and me sitting/eating at the tabletop. I sit on the stool at the end, DH on the stool by the pantry (so we can see the TV in the corner by the range!). I don't think the DW is impacted by the counter stool closest to it--probably far enough out as you noticed. We do have a friend who tends to sit in DH's seat whenever he's here for a gathering, and always sits pretty far into the aisle/walkway by the pantry. I always have to make him move closer to the tabletop so I can get a last minute serving piece or whatever from that pantry. For the record, I rarely have that problem when others sit there! :-) One other note; we purposely sought out chairs with a "low-profile" or not too beefy. The tabletop is just at the edge of the wall between the kitchen and the LR (formerly the DR) and my counter stool encroaches on the LR. We didn't want anything with too much visual or physical impact on the surrounding space....See MoreQ re. Island/tables, table skirts, seating, contractors boo boos
Comments (31)Thanks budge1!! I just got off the phone with tabletops.com. Holy cow do they have good customer service! I emailed my problem, and in no time received a response from the owner, and he says he's received this exact same question several times and is going to work on putting something up on his website or offering something to deal with the issue. Says he's gonna get his engineers on it :) Nice. Anyhow, he says he's done something similar in his own house, and notched out the table legs (he used 4 legs, 2 butting up against the cabinets and the 2 end ones) and ran a small i-beam down the length on each side which rests in the notches. Then he said he used epoxy to level out the top edge that the soapstone rests on (since the i-beam's are never totally straight) and voila! Apparently it's been holding up for years. I might see about some cross beams still, and doing it 'ladder style' but it's nice to know someone else's experiences (and the guy's a table maker, so that gives me more warm and fuzzies.) Thank you so much for the tip!...See MoreWWYD? No kitchen table in exchange for island with seating?
Comments (22)chitowncat - not sure how big of a remodel you are planning, but it wasn't until we gave up the idea of trying to retrofit our current floorplan and came up with an entirely new footprint that we freed up the room for an island (and a huge one at that) and a table. It took us a couple of years of mulling over options to have that epiphany. It was a lightbulb moment for sure and I can't believe it took us that long to come up with it. None of the KDs we got quotes from suggested it either. It ended up costing about 25% more than our original budget, but our kitchen is SO much more functional now. Well worth the extra wait and expense....See MoreGive up kitchen table for island seating? No other inside eating area.
Comments (41)Wow, what a gorgeous place you have there! With the way the kitchen ceiling height changes in dining area to the vaulted, I was not sure if that would look strange in your KD's design that goes all the way across the longer back wall. I just played with my app by cropping things from BB's peninsula plan to move stuff around. Here is what I came up with. You could keep a small prep sink under that one small kitchen window since the plumbing is already there, but I moved the main sink to the pennisula. I moved the couch to the other wall and removed one of the club chairs because I wanted to get furniture away from the slider. I'm not sure if a round table is a good idea or not, but just thought how nice it would be for games and also faces more towards the views and the TV. I am sure it is not to scale either. Oh well, just throwing this out there anyways to spark ideas. :-)...See Morebethy015
