Just installed one. We put in a corner cabinet it was 14" above the counter top and a custom built lazy susan for the corner base. Didn't think it was practical, but what a great way to store bathroom articles that normally you have to dig for.

I don't have a french door, I just have a sliding door, but I also have little room on either side - plus I do not like the dust-gathering-ness of draperies. I have been using a pleated shade over each glass, mounted above the frame of the window and overlapping the edges of the door. I am moving to roller shades. They can be mounted with extender brackets so that the shade does not hit the handle. They can be made any width or length. You can mount them right on the wood door or above the frame above the door. You can sometimes get two shades in one top valance (called the cassette) that can be made of plain plastic or can be covered with the same fabric as the shade. You can probably get roman shades the same way (I mean with the bracket to extend it out from the wall.) You can also get roller shades without the cord, that go up and down with just your hand's pressure, or electronically. The electronic ones can often be controlled with your home's automation (like Alexa) or you use the remote control. There are rechargeable batteries in the head piece that are supposed to work for up to six months, then you haul out the charging cord and charge them a few hours and you are good for another six months. I plan on ordering mine as soon as I can settle on a fabric choice.

i grew up in rentals and rented most of my adulthood. Most do provide window treatments and some don’t. This generally wouldn’t have affected my choices. However if you have no treatments the tenants will add their own and that might mean drilling holes or nailing things up. some tenants are not that good at diy but will do it anyway. in a brand new house I’d personally want to provide treatments to discourage any macGyver contraptions :)

So I love long low MCM ranch style homes. We have on it is 75 25 ‘ on the main floor we are on a sloped lot so we have a full walkout basement . IMO a very affordable way to build good square footage and we also have a fabulous view and so all the main living areas face the view and the bedooms to some extent too. I find vaulted ceilings a waste of heating and cooling my ceilings are typical 8’ ones that I love actually. I do not like attached garages but we could add one to our house but with great difficulty so our garage is further back and separate we live in BC and yes sometimes we need to carry groceries in the winter but not a big deal.We get very hot here in the summer low 90 to low 100s we have a huge overhang on the south side of the house that faces the view it stops the sun from beating in the windows in the summer but allows itin to heat in the winter .Our home is definately not rustic but the overhang is just areally practical thing and could cerstainly be a covered porch I guess but I love natural light in my house so no covered porch for me.
