New Patio Cover in L-shaped house -Ideas Needed

Hi! We're going to get rid of our pool at the end of summer which has a HUGE neighbor's oak tree dropping stuff into it nearly year round. We're looking to gain a larger area for a table under our patio. Our current patio is quite narrow AND low, which causes a ton of darkness inside the house. We miss seeing the sky! Trouble is, the present metal roof slopes down quite low, so we probably won't be able to add onto it (ie: with a retractable awning) to increase the size of the coverage for a large table with chairs. WHAT CAN WE DO? We're brainstorming ways to remedy this. Any ideas? We have one roofline extending OVER the second roofline by a couple of feet in the L. ) We are considering having a contractor remove the current patio, but would like to know if a TALLER patio covering could go in its place (above the roof line?) and extend a bit beyond the current roof. Also, are sky lights a thing in patios, to let more light into the house? Thanks!
