Renovation Novice Seeking Advice, Pretty Please
Comments (11)Sounds like you have a lovely project. With any of the dark finishes I like to have integral metals -- not coated finishes though some are very good. Rocky Mountain Hardware makes bronze in several different tones and their quality is tops. I've used them in two homes now and while some of their styles are stylized they have a Mushroom Knob (p 2 of the knobs) in a coppery bronze that I just love. They would be gorgeous with black, as you'll see. I've ordered them from Cape Cod Brass twice now and used CC for all my hardware -- they have a range of other good brands. Re F&B, I've worked extensively with their paint and it's my go-to brand for interior work. Depending on location, the Farrow's Cream can look like a parchment yellow or much more aggressively egg yolky. Alternately House White is very warm as is New White, which has an umber undertone and White Tie is an elegant ivory. Love their coatings, great to work with and the color complexity is terrific. They hold up beautifully and while people color match them that loses the complexity of undertone in paint with 8-12 pigments when color matching with only 3-4. Only 1 other paint has a similar surface quality in the matte (Estate Emulsion) finish and I really appreciate the effect on old walls. If there are plaster walls in your home you will see that most. I love a pull down faucet and Rohl has dark finishes in some of their styles though their bridge faucet is classic. Good luck with your choices! Would love to see the exterior paint job you mentioned if you feel like posting a pic. I so respect restoration and preservation of our visual heritage. Comments (14)Thank you so much for all the comments! In answer to the questions, - We have thought about a prep sink, and plumbing anywhere is straightforward because we're over a basement. But we have a second house with a similar setup and a prep sink, and we never use the prep sink, it just gets in the way. We are thinking about adding an undermount prep sink that could be covered up with a cutting board if we wanted to. - Unfortunately, we're pretty limited to the space we have. The original footprint of our house has 100 year old heart pine floors throughout and our historic district regulations wouldn't allow a massive reconfiguring. We don't mind the space limitations, we're an old house people, just want to be sure what we have is well planned-out. - We have seen what the brick looks like and it's great. The chimney was originally exposed in the kitchen of the original house and the former owners covered it with a soffit when they remodeled the kitchen. - I know there is no space on the left side of the range, but if we get the 48" range, I would have a griddle on the left hand side, and the griddle cover would serve as a staging area. That said, not having a staging area on that side (esp. because I'm right handed!) is a big concern. This has given me plenty of food for thought. I'm going to think today about putting a second oven in on the window wall. dyhgarden - I also like your idea. It would make a lot of sense to have the range on the window wall, and we could definitely add a second window instead of widening the window (window work can't be done until next year anyway so we have plenty of time to adjust the plan). I'm worried the range would be in the way on that wall, though. But I think I'm a little scarred by having a cooktop peninsula on the hallway side that forces a bottleneck in that walkway. Here's a larger layout with hopefully readable dimensions:...See MoreExterior Design Dilemma Seeking Facade Decor / Improvement Advice
Comments (10)You are a dare devil for chopping off the deck on your split ranch, and I love it. I just had a blast scribbling on your house too! Your last inspiration pic gives you a great spring board. Focus on creating new squares and rectangles that align with and distract from your current windows. Create a shallow trellis around the first floor doors - center the left on the middle of your 2nd story triple doors, and center the right on the middle of your 2nd story double windows. Make an iron railing outside the second story doors, a very shallow balcony the same depth as the trellis and line it with some pots of greenery. Make a rectangular hedge around the patio to give more geometry for the eye to focus on away from the wall of the house. Add in ground trees on the left, with some heft. Towards the middle and right go for tall evergreens set in urns, mixed with some shorter ones. Something else needs to happen with the second story far left window and far right double windows. Not sure what....See MoreLooking for some advice on a kitchen renovation. Different finishes?
Comments (0)So, finally diving in and doing a kitchen renovation. We decided on a cabinet that is in our price range. Also did a little custom designing in the kitchen. We are looking to do the island, and all lower cabinets one color(rift oak, winter finish) and all the uppers a maple wood Alabaster finish. Personally, I think it will look great, My wife has a visualization issue whereas she ideally would like to see it in person. Thoughts? The picture below is from the designers program, Colors are not exact. TY!...See MoreJennifer K
