Remodeling mid-century house: what trim 4 interior windows?

I am replacing the windows with narrow black casements for both exterior and for interior. I would like fir trim on the inside. If acceptable, what size and shape to use? No trim for exterior.

Clearstory windows are typically found on modern architectural style houses, and not traditional or historical style houses. Most builder and tract division houses are the latter style, and not modern style house. The post and beam houses you show in your pictures appear to be mid century modern styles. Here's a Frank Lloyd Wright house with clearstory windows. The idea behind clearstory windows is that they allow additional natural light into the house interiors. They can easily be a part of your house design if your architect is designing in the proper architectural style.

What city are you in? Are there any old mansions or larger homes still with original fixtures in your town? I live near Detroit, where racism and a failing economy meant that our Detroit older homes were not remodeled during the “spiff up” booms in the 70 s, 80s, and 90s. We have tons of original bathrooms from the 1910s -1930s. I love looking at the house listings to see them. Here, bathrooms of that era were tiled with 5x5 to 6x6 inch square tiles. Either to the ceiling around much of the room, or most of the way to the ceiling. A lot have that Art Deco style with black border tiles accentuating architectural features, but even in the plain (more like the craftsman style) homes, square wall tiles with a color theme for each bathroom was the norm. Wall field tiles had a slight variation in color that gave the expanses of tile a beautiful mottled look. Floor tiles were a close match, or had a darker shade of the same color mixed in. The only place I ever saw any subway tiles in an original home here was in a basement laundry and a basement second (summer?) kitchen meant only for servant use. So check more in your area and see if subways were used early in the last century in homes. In Detroit, they were not. Here, colorful square tiles were the norm early in the 1900s. Usually in light shades of greens, blues, peach, pinks, and pearly beige. The MCM tiles here were a bit smaller and their colors were more uniform. Plumbing fixtures early in the century were white. A tone of the wall color was used for tubs, toilets, and sinks in the MCM homes.

I like your original idea best - dark gray with blue undertones, wood accents. Someone in our neighbourhood did it and it looks great. In real life it doesn't look as as blue as this picture looks. The yard is edged with a Corten steel that looks wonderful with the wood. These pictures are sort of dark and don't do it justice. The wood and Corten accents are the "orange" that is the complementary colour to the "blue". For your house, a wood garage door and/or front door would look great if your budget allows. For landscaping, continue the MCM theme with lots of grasses and architectural plants such as yucca. I agree that light/medium gray with a red door would look too country which is not the look you are going for.

Your house is fantastic! please post ”after” pictures. You’re right—the white makes the (beautiful) terazzo look dingy. Swiss Coffee is usually a safe bet, but have you tried samples on the actual walls? That’s a must. Also, not sure theres enough contrast with Aged Beige to make it worth doing trim in another color. You might do all vertical services in Swiss Coffeee and then maybe a darker accent color, maybe a chocolate or terra cotta pulled from the terazzo, for the screens?

The new interior doors are fir (not installed yet). Red oak flooring. Alder mission-style kitchen cabinets. Black leather stools. Existing interior trim ranges from white to a very light, low grade beige trim to oak (kitchen picture attached) to fir (living room picture attached)

Thank you. House built in 1967 and has been partially remodeled at least two times.

Are you trying to choose one millwork style for the whole house as part of a longterm replacement strategy or are you trying to blend with what you already have? I would not add a third window trim style...

I want to change all of the interior trims when the new black windows are installed. Currently most are white or a cheap flimsy light-colored wood. I would very much like a wood trim rather than white.

If you are replacing everything the world is your oyster. I own a 1950 ranch that had horizontal band windows but colonial casing with slab doors. Ugh. As part of a whole house remodel the baseboards became 1/8's with a beveled top and the door casings became 5/4 x 3 custom milled with a 10degree bevel. Because why not?

My trim is all painted so just finger joint pine... I'm in the south where painted trim is the norm and has been for a long time. We have oak floors throughout, the kitchen is a mix of walnut and gloss white.
