Motorized Blinds for Windows (some high)

Barb Alli

The battery-powered motorized cellular blinds in the photos have bit the dust. They lasted about 6 years, and the motors finally gave out. Behind those blinds is a beautiful view of high desert mountains . . . missing that view while staying home so much.

Anyway, the parameters we are trying to meet:

1) Not A/C. We just can't afford to run wires up to some of these windows.

2) Rechargeable would work fine, as long as it's not frequent. We have heard the wands (plug in recharge) work well.

3) These blinds generally go up & down 4 times a day, as the sun moves around. Sometimes more. A couple of the windows are good-sized (the doghouse window is about 4' x 5.5'). There are two more high large windows not pictured. (Wide, not tall.)

4) Privacy needed when blinds are down--there's a straight shot from the street up into bedrooms at several angles. That said, the sun/light needn't be entirely blocked. What we have now are light-filtering, maybe 50%?

5) Not looking for anything fancy-looking; the view is the deal. The windows do not open. Small footprint in window highly desired (that is, when retracted, doesn't take up much space). We prefer the look of the cellular blinds . . . we think. Roller blinds have come a long way, and we might be convinced of improved looks and such. (Standing here with open eyes and mind . . . ) Added bonus would be some thermal help for winter nights, but that's not first on the list.

6) Reliable. The old blinds were Comfortex (double cell light filtering) with Simplicity motors. We think they were under-engineered for our purpose. Plus having to replace the batteries twice a year was a drag, even with lithium ion batteries. The configuration of that doghouse window means an extension ladder jury-rigged with stretcher bars to get to the top rail, after moving the DR table out of the way, etc. We are getting too old for that.

7) Cost isn't the first issue, but we aren't profligate. We were shocked that the blinds cost more than the windows when we renovated back in 2014. However, we understand value.

Details appreciated! Thank you in advance.
