Landscaping Ideas needed

I need help figuring out what to change with my backyard and landscaping and making an entertainment area for gatherings. Any ideas from anyone with a good eye?

Having a pic of the house and how it relates to the area and knowing where you are would help.

along with the pix.. it would be helpful to know how you want to use the space .. bocci?? future pool .. crumb crunchers who need grass .. what do you mean by entertainment space????

the next step would be to ID the trees .. so we can define how easily it would be to work under them ... pic of leaves will get you an ID ... one thing for sure.. regardless.. you can not do significant excavation under mature trees without potential damage to said trees ...

and some idea of how active you want to garden would also help .. no use planning something you have no interest in maintaining ...

and finally .. grass is a very good entertainment area .. so you have to suggest a direction you want to move in.. with a little more precision ... deck.. patio ... agora .. lol ... https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffcm&q=agora&iax=images&ia=images

depending on where you are ... proper planting time might be an issue.. though hired pros can do things the rest of us.. might not get away with ...

Hi, Hoping a pro will jump in here but in the meantime, you asked about using timbers. There are a lot more options out there now that likely didn't exist when the timbers went in, so I'd say look at those, like the blocks you can buy at Home Depot or Lowes or even get more attractive ones at a landscape supply place.Wood on the ground is a dinner call for ants. Is this your DIY project for your parents? Do they have pest control service? If so, you need to get them involved in the ant issue once you've pulled out the timbers. It's not usually an extra fee if they have a quarterly service contract. You may want to consider taking out all the plant material on the side and starting over. Hard to tell exactly from the side photo, but none of the plantings look like anything that can't be easily replanted and much divided or replaced with something else that won't over grow.

Rosemarie, you don't have to do it all at once. Take the pic to a local nursery (not a big box store, but a regular nursery) and have them help you with similar looking plants that will grow in your area. Doug's design is a mature landscape, so it will take several years for a newly planted area to look as lush and full as what he shows. But, you'll get there. Plant things as you can afford them and as you find the plants you want.

Lovely house; I would start by removing the hanging baskets. They just block and darken the house. Find a rug with some pops of color that works with your house, and put a little seating area on the porch. Pull one of the bright rug colors onto the front door. Low plants along the front of the porch to keep the porch open and bright.

A corner lot always looks more defined/finished…. if the landscape continues around the corner….so you have a pretty yard from both streets..also with that many windows in front ….some small …even flowering ….trees could add add a little privacy element and a pretty view from the sun room
