Landscape Design Design Dilemma

Landscaping Ideas Needed ASAP, Please Advise!

Brick rancher facing north, gets morning sun, afternoon shade on the west side. More sunny on east side throughout the day. Zone 7, north Georgia. Need help for foundation plants, perennials etc. Low maintenance preferred. Tried iScape, but end up not liking anything I put together. Down to last minute, my husband will just put anything if I don’t decide now.
Plan to round off corner on east side of house instead of squared off.

Here are some suggestions:

The plants include: dwarf laceleaf japanese maple, camellias, osmanthus, shasta daisies, miss lemon abelia, vintage jade distylium & soft touch holly. All of these plants are suited for Georgia.

Go to your local nursery (not HD or Lowe's) they can recommend plants

Lovely house; I would start by removing the hanging baskets. They just block and darken the house. Find a rug with some pops of color that works with your house, and put a little seating area on the porch. Pull one of the bright rug colors onto the front door. Low plants along the front of the porch to keep the porch open and bright.

Hire a landscape designer for a job this size. Interview several because they can differ radically on what they advise. Check APLD's website. Look for the one's with their own web page, that tells you they're seriously doing this for a living and not just dabbling in their spare time. ASk to see a portfolio. Landscape contractors may also be able to recommend someone since they see their work but be careful of the contractor who says he can design it for you. If the outfit it large they may have someone on staff. Be aware that designers and contractors have relationships going. They refer each other very often and not necessarily because they feel that person is better than someone else in the business but because it's payback time for the last job referred. So don't base your decision solely on what a designer or contrator says as to who they recommend you hire. Interview recent clients. Take your time and do this phase of the project slowly. It's very important to get the design right. In the end it will show.

Almost assuredly, your steps could stand to be widened to the full opening between the center posts, and a spacious landing built at their base. We can't see it because of the distance of the camera, but likely, the walk also needs widened and could stand to be pulled farther away from the porch, so that the beds are actually big enough to hold shrubs and annuals. Rather than being at the center of the house, a new tree would do more for the house if it were off to the left, toward the lot line.

If you want more specific feedback on a direction to go in, get rid of the two shrubs that block the view. (If they're useful, maybe you can transplant them somewhere.) Then completely rephotograph the scene, taking a panorama of slightly overlapping pictures so we can see the whole view at once. One camera location should be the same as your first picture of the thread. A second camera position would be between the large shrubs that were removed. Each camera position would be several overlapping pictures that show from lot line to lot line (where the neighboring houses show as part of the background.) The walk itself helps to emphasize the entrance. Flanking it with plantings usually doesn't, especially if the plantings have any height. Usually, they contribute to obstructing the entrance or making the walk feel like a cattle path at the slaughterhouse.

Doug beat me to it, curved beds really help break up the squareness of everything, and make the sidewalk part of the landscape. The ferns are not making anything look dark btw.

ONE thing I would suggest as part of the house, ok 2, paint the front door a more bright color and remove the shutters from that big window.

Re-do the beds to incorporate curves. Then take a photo of the house and another one of Doug's ideas to your local nursery. Ask them to suggest similar looking/performing plants that will do well in GA. You can hire the work done, or you can install their suggestions yourself over time and a couple of seasons.
