I've been under the weather for the last few days, so wasn't able to act on any of the additional suggestions until today. Thank you so much to everyone for the feedback, pointing out both the good and the bad. Today I moved a few things around. I decided to concentrate my efforts of lighting, as I think this will help us to enjoy the room more. The new additions are just stand ins, while I look for the right lamps and plants etc. I will also look for better wall art by the love seat and go to Benjamin Moore to look for a warm neutral that's lighter for the walls. I also liked the suggestions to replace the several small accessories with larger ones. And also to try to incorporate the window seat into the room more somehow. I was thinking of trying more colorful cushions on it, to tie it in and make the eye travel back there more. I will keep the points about the tables in mind for when it's time to look at new furniture. Thank you again so much! I feel so much better about this room already! I would like to begin saying that I love the minimalist aesthetic you have. I’m a less is more person and I don’t like random artwork for the sake of filling walls. With that said, I’d like to see more color warmth on the walls. The buttery white is making it too stark. Have you considered painting? I would try the sectional against the buffet wall to free up the window, and add your teal accents into the window treatment. Eliminate the glass table or move it between the chairs. Add more unique floor lamp lighting near the couch. The buffet can then be moved to the kitchen wall.

"I'm stuck with the couches." Therein is your entire problem. You literally have two elephants in the living room. They're too big and there are two of them. What about getting rid of the loveseat and replacing it with two armchairs, up on legs, in a pattern that works with carpeting, rug, and remaining sofa? If you did this, you could float the sofa to face the far window and that would also open up the other window. Put a small console in a color to the right of that window and a couple low armchairs in the corners or facing the other windows--source the pieces from Craigslist.. This would hugely open up the room because the windows wouldn't be blocked. Check Craigslist for upholstered, small-scale armchairs and put patterned or colorful throws that pull together your grey/beige/wall color palette. Get a round ottoman in a color and with a lid for your child's toys. Or put a bookcase behind the floating sofa with baskets for the toys. Additionally, the very nice wall color doesn't harmonize well with the carpeting, so that adds to the problem of poor cohesiveness. (Maybe the carpeting and walls go better together in daylight. Next time you post a Dilemma, take pictures from all four corners--four walls and daytime. You didn't offer enough visual information.) Are you allowed to paint? If so, then find a lighter wall color that works better.
