Brutal but fixed the problem... Living in the UK: Mid season (June) after an infestation of small black dots (presumably eggs but I never worked out what they were and may not be relevant) the edges of the leaves started turning red and thicker than usual round the edges. After some searching it sounds like it had a fungal infection and the best solution was to dig it up and throw it away. As it is my only plant I thought I’d try some “kill or cure” first. I harvested all the stems and leaves so all that was left was closed buds. I then boiled the kettle, put it in the watering can (don’t melt your watering can) and watered the plant and the surrounding area with a radius of a foot. After a week I harvested and watered again. Apart from a few scorch marks on some of the leaves because some idiot poured boiling water on them the plant was cured. :)

A few thoughts... Was the weather hot this year? I know it's tough growing on concrete or blacktop, that usually makes matters worse. Also, maybe you had SVB problems... currently or in the past (growing in the same spot, they can hatch this year right under the plant.) It's hard to tell if it's SVB or bacterial wilt... bacterial wilt often takes down the entire plant... yours looks like just part of the plant. The fruit aborts can be heat related, especially since they are on pavement. I have a rear main vine on blacktop and no fruits set there, plus some leaves have crispy edges. The dried up leaves near the middle look similar to aged leaves near the beginning of a plant--they get that look from a combination of things--age, heat, wetting of the leaves during high heat, etc. I would look for signs of frass & holes in the vine section that's wilted, close to the stump. Also kinked or broken vines can cause the rest of a section of vine to wilt like that. See if you have any cucumber beetles in the flowers too. Hope this helps. Mark

I'd love to try and help you while we wait for the Calvery to get here. Did the curling coincide with the leaf splotches? Which way are the leafs curling? Upward curling of leaves in itself is fairly comon and usually disconcerning. Any texture to the splotches? Like mold. I have had brownish purplish spots before that I believe were a result of using liquid kelp and fish emulsion. Some sort of sun burn or reaction. Have you had a problem with insects like aphids,thrips or anything else. If you have any fruit yet do they show any problems? If you don't have fruit you are pushing the envelope before frost in your area. I'll share this much now. There is only so much you can do to stop or slow fungal or bacterial disease. You can spray with a copper based spray or Ortho garden disease control, they should be available to you at home stores or nurseries. Viral infections usually means the plant needs to be removed before infection spreads. Spreading is in most cases done by insects. The key for best success is prevention. Keep your garden free of weeds(great bug hangouts)and remove old plants and discard in the trash can.Add plenty of organic material to your soil. There is good microbes and bacteria in organic matter/compost that will help fight off the bad stuff. Lastly put down a good layer of mulch each year.Watering with a soaker hose is also a god idea if you do water. Good luck, keep your post near the top.

Interesting. I seem to not get the balance right, obviously. I read that Citrus do NOT like to be too wet - and in fact some articles go as far to suggest they need to dry out between waterings. In my case, I had been allowing the top couple of inches to dry out before soaking again. In fact when I dig down with my finger the soil (closer to the root area) is in fact still moist even while the top layer is dry. Confused .... :-(
