Small fenced in backyard with pool and concrete patio design help

Hi all! I am in need of advice on how to go about redesigning our small fenced in backyard area. We want to stain the patio to change its color so it looks less industrial like but we are unsure of what color would look best. We also feel like the way the fence is looks really bare and were wondering if there was a way to spruce it up along the back wall without putting in a new fence. We also were thinking of doing an L shaped couch and fire pit in the back right. We are really hoping someone on here can provide some suggestions on how to spruce it up especially the patio area without taking on too much of a cost. Thank you in advance!

You could stain the concrete the color of the house. I would add greenery in large decorative containers with tall plants along the fence. Containers of flowers also. Adding greenery to the space will make a huge difference. You need more than what you have out there now.

@SJS Interiors thank you!! The house is white and that’s what I originally wanted to stain it but i can’t find any pictures of white stained concrete/ the guy at Lowe’s said it’s not popular because it apparently gets really dirty. Any thoughts on this? Also, yes totally agree about the greenery! Do you have any recommendations for tall plants though ? Thank you so much again!

I would center the garden area with chicken coop on the backside of the pool. Make a wider grand entrance and transition possibly using an arbor. The way you show it to the side does not balance. If possible I would put the shed along a wall on the back of the house convenient for the pool suppplies. I would place all gardening tools in an area back with the chickens as this will be closer for gardening as well. Best wishes!

Have you ever seen other patios that are multi-level? It is common configuration. In yours, you'd need to step down one step. What would prevent that from looking good? I can neither see nor imagine any problem in making it happen. You just need to figure out the activities you'll use it for and how much space you want/need and then design it. This seems completely straight forward to me. That the yard drops off at one side is not the direction to build a patio in. There, you'd make whatever access you need for whatever purpose, probably involving steps, or have it be a planted space.

A few things to think about. - It might be difficult to keep grass healthy on that side yard. A walkway w/ some plantings might do better and provide a nice entrance for guests to come around to your back yard. - Depending on what zone you're in, sun availability, etc... Vertical arborvitea could do well to soften the eyesore. Consider only doing a few rather than a thick hedgerow if they'll block any sunlight. - Firepit? Maybe. The smoke (and PM and carcinogens that it produces) can be annoying for you and neighbors. I think they're OK in more open areas but that's not what you have. An outdoor fireplace with a tall chimney (and possibly built against your house) might be a better option but also $$$$'s. - Firepit seating. Teak benches that will allow you to rearrange easily when you want. - Spa? As in hot tub? Many people install them and then after the novelty wears off get tired of the maintenance. Some love them but many not. A good sauna might be a better option.

You could add pavers or tile but that would be costly but I always check all options because sometimes the difference in cost is not as much as you think. I couldn’t tell if you house was white or gray. However I think you would be happier with pavers or tile. I would visit your local nursery and they would be able to help you with plants.

I have not used charcoal grey or brown stains. Blues and greens do not hold up outside. Have used black and red and it was on concrete that had been surface ground with a carborundum stone grinder. The black was dark and harsh like a fresh hair dye job at first, but then faded over a year's time to a nice taupe grey, and I like it just fine. (I applied it twice and let it set overnight the 2nd time.) The red was orange rust colored and I did not care for it at all. The stains, being watery, spatter easily and stain any masonry object nearby if any gets on it. I don't know how it would stain other materials. I applied it with a broom and got fine splatter mist on nearby masonry. (It does not look horrible but I would have preferred it not happen. Slightly worse, I had areas that ran, bled and pooled into seams between pavers ... and those look like crying after an already bad mascara job.) Something that would mop it on with would probably be better. Mask off anything nearby on which you don't want stain.
