Did you learn a non-food related skill while renovating your kitchen?
Comments (14)AKTillery, that hood looks fabulous! Over the years of thrifty home maintenance I had already learned simple electrical (changing outlets to 3 prong, changing switches, installing ceiling lights and fans) and plumbing (changing out faucets and sinks which involved altering the under sink pipes somewhat, shower heads, garbage disposal, fixing the leaky sillcocks outside, fixing the toilet and actually replacing a dishwasher). I have always painted and caulked-- the paint that I used this time is of so much better quality, though, it made me look much more expert -- I was just admiring it yesterday! My Reader's Digest Big Book of Home Maintenance, although decades old, still guides me through such tasks. That, and YouTube! I have previously cut and installed baseboard too, but I still don't have the mitering down to perfection. The only things that I did in the kitchen, besides the painting, were to replace the cheap looking window trim that the GC had used while insulating under it at the same time (still struggled with the miter cuts), re-installed the dimmer switch because it actually wasn't installed correctly, and replaced the outlets and switches with bisque color because I didn't like the bright white the GC installed. Oh, and caulking areas where cold air was flowing in from behind one cabinet and the hood....See MoreWhat's the biggest lesson you learned while landscaping?
Comments (96)My main lesson is: Know when you need help and do not be ashamed to ask for it. I admit, initially I found having to hire someone to be a bit demoralizing. As someone who takes great pride in doing all of my own gardening and landscaping, it took a bit out of me to realize I could not transform my front yard 100% on my own. Due to my status as a single working mother of three, a super busy schedule the month I wanted to tackle my landscaping, and a physical ailment that restricts my free movement at times, calling in back up was the right thing to do. By doing so, I knew I’d get my flower bed looking the way I wanted quickly and with less mental stress and possible physical ailment. best regard bestezy...See MoreGetting new floors - so much to learn. What did you learn?
Comments (4)My thoughts are that you should probably do some more research. You can start on this website, by searching for threads that use the terms luan, joists, flooring, subfloor, acclimatization. I would wish to become pretty educated, at least educated enough to ask smart questions of your installers. I researched the heck out of my flooring project (I'm on concrete slab), and decided to purchase the flooring from a local, extremely reputable flooring store (many excellent Yelp reviews) to have leverage so that the store AND the manufacturer are more likely to stand behind the product AND their install. They do their own install, and I requested (and got) their "A Team" installers. I had visited several stores, and what I liked about the store I chose was how patient they were with answering my many, many questions. And they went out of their way to offer me options I hadn't thought of. Like this: they mitered (is it called "picture framing?) around my raised hearth--coolio! Like this: they made sure that where the wood floor meets the tile, there is no transition strip. Like this: they commented that where we have 2 steps up to our front door, that the step was rather narrow, and they could "beef it up" quite easily, making it a wider step. And they did so for no extra charge. Like this: they include for no extra charge, moving of all the furniture out of the rooms, and then back in. Like this: I chose my new baseboards, and they accommodated my request to have no quarter round, which requires more precise cuts near the walls. And those are really just asthetic concerns. You really need to start with functional concerns, which the experts here can help you with. As much as a hassle as new floor installation is, and expensive, you want to get it done right....See MoreWhat have you learned about yourself in isolation?
Comments (32)I'm doing fine here, my kids bring food and hubby and I are doing daycare for our 3-year-old great-grandson. His Mom is a bank manager and working very long hours. Tonight we will keep him over as she has to work until ten. Our daughter is working from home, she's an Apple manager and doing conference calls 8 hours a day. I communicate with all my siblings daily on a FB chat. We have a ball. I call the grands often and I keep very busy. Do lots of cooking, more than I've done when the kids were little. I have no complaints except for the way our government has failed to step up. We all know who caused that. tsk, tsk....See Morewildchild2x2
