Blank Canvas 22'x30' living room. Help needed with design/style

Hi Pros! First time posting on here so here goes......We bought our forever home in the Bahamas (family of 6) colonial style fixer upper. First floor has light travertine throughout with emperador marble 4"x4" inserts in the foyer. I think my general style is modern transitional, classic. I would first like to tackle this living room which is off to the right of the foyer(dining room is off to the left of foyer, family room is upstairs) Space is 22'W x 30'L 11' ceilings. There are french doors that will open up to an outdoor living space in the future. I would like to do an accent wall. I saw a picture of one on Houzz with ledgestone but I've been told its an outdated look? Unsure which wall to use as accent wall. Unsure if accent wall needed. Also how do you furnish and decorate/design a space like this? I want a beautiful space and just really scared to get it all wrong. I'm open to all your suggestions/advice. HELP! thanks in advance

Hi Ayana!

Congratulations on the forever home! If it were me, I'd make the wall opposite the windows the accent / TV / Fireplace wall. It may be a little tricky to transition materials with the doors in that wall, however. If you like the look of ledgestone, then I wouldn't worry about whether someone said it's dated. If it's a quality product and installation, it will look good. The important thing is that you like it. You may want to find a local pro to help you design the wall if you're looking for something like your inspiration photos. A lot of thought went into the electrical, lighting, and installation details there. The good thing about your inspiration photo is that the seating arrangement would be easy to replicate in your space! Hope that helps - Doug

Thanks!!!!!! Do you know who makes a quality product for ledgestone? What would you do with the walls and accent wall. I’m open to different ideas. Not sold on the ledgestone look. Thanks again.

Our den is 9' x 17'. We have the TV on one long wall under a window into the adjacent kitchen, and the couch is on the opposite long wall under a bank of windows. There are three doorways and a window on one short end of the room. The only unbroken wall in the room is on the other short end. We bought three 3' wide cabinets for that wall with bookcases on top of them. It was an inexpensive way to get the look of a custom wall unit filling the entire 9' wide space. Even though it's been more than 20 years, I still remember the amazing effect moving those cabinets in had on the appearance of the room: it suddenly seemed to appear much wider. I think it was all the horizontal lines from the top of the cabinets and the shelves of the bookcases. It was really quite striking. If you're going to have a sectional wrap to your short wall, how about putting something horizontal ON the wall, maybe picture ledges or even artwork hung to emphasize horizontal lines.

Now I understand where you are headed. My suggestions will not be matchy matchy and are pretty eclectic in nature. So, hopefully you will get some ideas you may not have thought about. Let's start with the DR. Drapes: I like dramatic so, if the rug has bronze that would be my first choice though there is nothing wrong with gold. I like plain simple drapes. I think drapes like blacksplashes should not be a focal point of a room when you have other beautiful things going. They should help frame the room like the color on the walls do. You may not need pinch pleated drapes. It would save you money not to have the pinch pleats. You need to decide if you want to run them from ceiling to floor or with a rod (I saw some beautiful rods at Calico Corner's. I think JCP carries Kirsch hardware also) above the window not from the ceiling. Dining table: I notice most people select wood to use with oriental rugs. I am working with a designer for my family room and breakfast nook and he just taught me a good lesson: Print rug-glass table, solid rug-wood table. He said you want to show off the beauty of the rug at all times from every direction. They do make some very large glass tables that you can use with 2 wooden pedestals for support or a great square base. If you are having a lot of guests for dinner like Christmas than you can add a folding table and use the same table cloth. This is just a suggestion. You can use wood but I always like to share new knowledge when I learn something. I still like crystal for chandeliers in dining rooms. In this case I would use crystal with some funky lamp shades to add a little fun into the room. You may find these at Home Goods or on line. I would try leopard for shades. It's hard to visualize if this will work without actually seeing it in person. Maybe someone will photoshop. Do you know the size of the table you want to use? I also think you may be able to find dining room chairs on ebay or a used furniture store that might be in decent condition or you can buy them new. Remember the chair wood does not need to match the wood of the table. There is more interest created when they don't. Here is another idea for chairs: you can used entirely different ones for the head of the table. Actually, I am pretty good at decorating eclectically. My friends are always looking for my eye. The designer I am working with always says to me "what do you need me for". Well, he is a great buffer between me and my BF whom I share my new home with. He has made my life so much more easier and is worth every penny. I am also learning alot about decorating from him.

I would consider moving the t.v. to the wall where the sofa is now. I would also center the rug and turn the sofa 90 degrees to face the fireplace. You could pull the chair out of the corner just a bit. You would then be able to see the t.v. from both the chair and the sofa. I would look for drapes that are close to your trim and fireplace color that are lined so they have more weight to them. If you prefer to keep the arrangement as is, center the rug and pull the sofa up so the front legs are on it as mentioned above. Add a slender console table behind it and find a great piece of art to go over that. Add a floor lamp next to the chair in the corner. I would add a tall plant to the right of the fireplace and an end table with lamp on the opposite end of the sofa. I would also consider adding an oval coffee table in metal and glass to avoid blocking the fireplace and so you can see the rug underneath. I would add navy, cream and taupe throw pillows to the sofa and a cream throw over the back of the chair in the corner. Your mantel could use a piece of art with a pair of candlesticks on one side and a taller glass vase on the other. Do you have a budget for accessories and a few pieces of furniture?

it is very hard without better measurements. I would have the couch face the window and then have the 2 chairs either face each or other or be on one side or the other. Remember there does not need to be a lot of space between couch and chairs or table. the desk is up to you my first thought was to place on the wall? small rugs perhaps?

Hi Ayana - I've not personally dealt with ledgestone. But I've seen some pictures of installations with a pre-manufactured product that shows regular block-sized seams. The seams killed the whole effect. I don't know if that means the installer didn't do a good job or the product was a cheap knock-off. Before deciding on a product and installer, I would ask to see an example installation.

A blank slate can be intimidating! It's helpful to have an overall picture of where you're headed. (The same is true for me!) So let's assume that you like the whole look of the inspiration photo you shared. The non-accent walls are white - crisp, clean, and set off the subtle coral-reef like pallet of the rest of the space. All things being equal, the accent wall could be several other colors and textures. These might be things you could consider for your space:
- They could have created a wall unit in the medium wood tone of the trestle framing above and the low cabinets along the wall. Bamboo could give an interesting texture and warmth to the space. A wall unit could include a fireplace (electric), TV, display shelves, and bookshelves.
- They could have pulled the pea green from the chairs onto the accent wall as a paint color and created just the fireplace in maybe a limestone or soapstone. In that case, they might have used large art on the walls rather than shelves.
- They could have used a grasscloth wallpaper in a similar offwhite color to the ledgestone. (Talk about outdated! But I just put some in my bedroom.) There again, the fireplace bumpout might want to be a different material.
