Turning my Living/Dining room into my kitchen
Hi,
I need some advice:
My husband wants to knock down a wall and elongate our kitchen to about 4 feet after the front window
The one thing I am worried about is what to do with the front small space now AND is it weird that once you walk in through the front door, all you see is kitchen?

Comments (10)Hi, Lindsay. I've got a few furniture arrangements to consider. They all have a moveable island cart for the kitchen. The first two are similar to your current set-up, in that they define the entry. One has the reversible chaise while the other is a regular sofa. The last one has a sideboard behind the sofa. It would serve as a sofa table and provide additional storage. You could think about placing your less frequently used kitchen items in there. The last one also has a reversible chaise. Pottery Barn has some reversible chaises, but I'm not certain their upholstered furniture is of high quality, so you'll want to look into that. Their case goods may be okay. Comments (1)I would say you have enough gray already, and with the floors you would be much better off with an ivory or off-white paint color. Gray has been terribly overused and is now a dead trend, even though not everyone is aware of that. By that I mean gray used to excess and with everything else in a gray/colorless range. It seems to be very easy to fall into that trap, but with off-white wall you'll be encouraged to introduce more warm, vital colors into your home. Your rug sounds a bit colorless also, but you won't know until you see it in situ. Also it is hard to recommend colors without some idea of the space and how the rooms relate to each other. Do you have a floor plan, sketch or pictures that you can post to help us give you ideas? Comments (14)The table top in your inspiration pic caught my attention. It's not the usual furniture showroom table top. 4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoWrong direction. If you are going to expand, and I think that's not the best solution for this house, extend into the breakfast room. Also the wall you want to knock down is likely bearing, so that will require a beam that may not be able to be hidden in the ceiling. Any new cabinets will not match the old ones and new flooring will be required. This can be an expensive remodel for a townhouse.
Is this townhouse on slab or is there a crawlspace or basement?

If you keep the arch and the support post it might be less expensive to take out the wall. Alternately, you could keep a pony wall and add the seating for the peninsula on the back:

4 years agohere is what it looks like now. We want to knock down the wall to make the room usable. Right now it has no purpose and we dont even go in it. Why have the room if you aren't going to use it. I agree that I am not a fan of making it one big kitchen, so I need to persuade
my husband.

4 years agoOpening the wall (even to a half wall) will accomplish two things--it will make the DR seem more open and user-friendly. If kids are using the DR table for a game or homework it will be easier to supervise while in the kitchen. It will also shed light on what will be the peninsula. Someone mentioned spending money--so I added a couple of extra windows to the kitchen. ;)

4 years agoIt might be a good idea to consider placing the dining room at the front of the townhouse and using the larger area for congregating.
