House painting in and out
Hi there! We are thinking about painting our house white in and out for an overall airy farm house look, and we have some questions on how to go about it. See pictures of our house at end of the post.
For exterior: our current idea is to paint most of the sidings white, including the two front porch columns and all the trims & gutter. We want to paint the window frames (vinyl) black, as well as the front door. and the questions we have are:
1. Which shade of white would you recommend?
2. Should we paint the garage doors white or black? There is not a lot of siding coverage for the front of the house, and we are worried that painting the garage doors black will overshadow the overall white house look we want to achieve
3. Would you recommend adding a 3rd color into the mix (e.g. painting window trims & singles light grey).
4. For the back of the house, would you recommend painting the window frames black to be consistent with the front of the house, or should we save money and keep the current color? Do people even look at the back of a house?
5. what color would you recommend we paint the deck with?
For interior: we know we want to pain the walls white, but we are not sure what to do with the trim. Would you recommend us keeping the current trim color, so lighter colored walls (white) + darker colored trim (cream); or should we paint the trim white as well. Since the window frames are also cream (we are not going to paint the interior window frames), we are not sure how it will turn out if we painted both walls and trims white.

3 years agoThis looks like the PNW. I really can't see it painted white with black windows. The back yes, because there is no stone, but not the front. (Whatever you do, do it on all sides.)
How about these colors? Gray Owl is very light. There might be areas you want to use Storm or Witching Hour.

Comments (21)Oh my....I didn't check back in again yesterday as we were out painting all day, practically sunrise to sunset. I couldn't believe the number of responses! Thanks everyone for the "thumbs up" on color choices and that we are on the right track. We were joking last night that she (the house) knew what she was doing when she chose us! We think she is smiling! LOL Anyone who owns an old home knows that the work is never done and sometimes that does get one down. We came in shortly before dark, showered, grabbed a sandwich and headed for bed! I have today off and will continue. Just a few touch ups on the front porch left and then I am calling it done for this year. Got the floors on bedroom porch and front porch painted. Then started on the dining room porch. Hoping to get that mostly done today as it is not nearly as ornate. Today will probably be the last painting day we have for this fall, as next weekend we have family commitments and doubt we will have warm enough weather after that. Comments (4)I'm comfortable with a couple of weeks, maybe a month. Of course this is all variable, based on where you live. A dry, dusty environment probably less, actually. If you begin to get dust/dirt on the primer the topcoat isn't going to adhere properly. Before your painter starts on the topcoat, take some clean white paper towels out, slightly moist. Rub down a couple of sections of primer. If it comes clean, you are good to go. If it comes off dirty they are going to need to wash it down. NOT POWERWASH, just a hose and a brush to knock the dust/dirt off. No compromise on this. They are not going to care much once you've paid, and they leave. Comments (7)I would NOT add faux stone to your home. Painting the blue out with a darker gray or even a sage color would enhance your home. Do consider either painting your garage doors the same color as the new siding color you choose. Or go in the opposite direction and add the cedar look garage doors to coordinate with the cedar on your future (very lovely) home....See More

I think I’d look into limewashing your stone to lighten it. Are you redoing your front windows in black? I have a neighbor who has white windows on the back and black on the front and it looks good.

3 years agoWhat a view! I think your interior would look gorgeous painted Sherwin-Williams alabaster, paint the trim in a semi-gloss sheen the walls eggshell. Your stonework is very brown and I think to pull off the light and airy look you’re going to want to address the stonework doing something either German smear or the limewash Katie B mentioned above. The lime wash looks much easier and less labor intensive. Leave the garage door as is and update your light fixtures. I would not paint the vinyl windows black leave them white, paint the gutters shakes everything white, lime wash the stone and your place will look amazing. SW shoji white, SW alabaster (my house is alabaster) both would be nice exterior whites not to bright.

3 years agoI wouldn’t paint your vinyl windows...I just caught that.
also, I tend to think cream trim and white walls with make the trim look dirty. It works here, I think, because the window frames are black.

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agopainting exterior vinyl white windows black, is not recommended. mainly because it won't hold up and it could void any warranty.
what you could do is frame the windows w/a wood trim and paint that black
i like the color combo houssan recommended.
I also like the idea of whitewashing or liming the stone (Romabio), painting the posts black or charcoal, and maybe redoing the shade in the dormer peak with a cedar color.
I'd also keep the wood garage doors, (are the wood?) and maybe lighten the stain
