GE Induction Range Problem
Comments (254)I suggest that for the pile of complexity known as an induction cooktop or induction range (only the cooktop is induction), that the price of the unit be considered a rental cost. Factory warranty is typically for only one year without a warranty extension. With a warranty extension divide by 5 for a yearly rental cost when you have a 5-year warranty, and by larger values if the warranty can be extended further (warranty costs add to purchase price). My Frigidaire cooktop is running OK at 8 years with warranty extensions so my yearly "rental" has dropped to under $250 (guessing). So Maxim 1 is to buy warranty extensions for pricey, reliability-challenged appliances, and if such an appliance fails after the warranty ends just replace it. Maxim 2 is that price analysis should be combined with an evaluation of warranty costs (should be inversely proportional to reliability) to choose a unit where the imputed yearly rental is affordable....See MoreWondering if Covid-19 will stop any military conflicts?
Comments (10)aktillery, I'm so sorry you're going through a really rough time right now. Many of us, while not suffering any physical problems from this virus, are still feeling the pain of loneliness, isolation, and emotional stress, due to worry and fear about its spread. Thankfully, many people are spontaneously doing thoughtful acts for others, such as delivering groceries or doing a chore for someone at higher risk, so they won't have to leave their house and chance any exposure. But on a much larger scale, I got to wondering how far beyond the necessity to help worse hit nations during the Covid19 crisis, will we extend our benevolence. That brought me to remembering the story of the Christmas Truce, during World War One. Unfortunately, it lasted so briefly, before they resumed their orders. But the point is, if soldiers from two of the world's greatest enemy nations were so inspired to call a truce from killing each other, simply by hearing the sound of Christmas Carols being sung in the trenches, couldn't a world wide deadly pandemic be enough, to inspire nations currently warring, to so the same? Did we not learn from the Spanish Flu pandemic, that military conflicts should be taken off the schedule, when a deadly virus is threatening every nation? Could we have evolved enough so that leaders will recognize that wasting their money, time and manpower in continued conflicts at this time, is ludicrous? Will we able to pass down a story of the 'Covid19 Truce' which historical records would say marked the first time in history, that a world wide pandemic ended all warring between nations? Then afterward, seeing they'd managed to exist without fighting for X amount of months, imagine if each conflict was just not resumed. If a tragedy isn't used to do anything more humane, more charitable, and more moral, then we've only accumulated losses, but wasted the opportunity to better ourselves. I'd love to hear of the 'Covid19 Truce' of 2020. Nice dream, isn't it?...See MoreAnyone grow and use seckel pears vs bartlett? vs. crabapple?
Comments (23)Actually Annie that makes me want to plant the tree even more now, better get going! But still not sure. Really should do Bartlett if I'm going to plant a pear, I really only have room for one, particularly if they are that slow to fruiting. Not sure it will be worth it, Bartlett pears are a dime a dozen in the stores. That space could be taken up by a sour cherry or an Italian prune . . . MEANWHILE, my plans have evolved! While searching for a mail order crab apple, I found out there is an heirloom apple called "James Grieve" which was my grandfather's name! So if I'm going to plant an apple tree, that would be the one! Have to wait until next spring, the nurseries are sold out for this year but they told me I could reserve one starting in July for next year. Won't be the end of the world to wait, I was mostly interested in the scent for an apple tree anyway. Meanwhile, I guess I need to get going with planting any other fruit trees. I've already purchased a redhaven peach tree to plant in honor of John Prine. I have room for two more fruit trees, although I am considering some bush cherries and bush plums for some other areas on the property's edge. Not this year though, those I would have to mail order. I also have one other area that I might consider experimenting with planting a quince tree or bush on, but that would need some tracking down. I've never seen fruits on the flowering quince shrub although I have read that they bear fruit. It's down by the road so not sure how much good fruit I would get out of it anyway, but it would make a stunning specimen when in bloom....See MoreCovid on the brain
Comments (23)~~~ I don't think you can assume the country has become lax because of a parking lot with cars. I go out regularly to grocery, hardware, drug store, hair salon and once in a while to a regular store. I've never encountered any kind of crowds, everyone is wearing a mask and everyone is keeping their distance.~~~ I hate disagreeing but that's being lax. Very lax. From the CDC about running essential errands when everyone is wearing a mask. Disinfect the shopping cart, use disinfecting wipes if available. Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands. Only touch products that you plan to purchase, if possible. We all touch our nose and eyes so many times a day we don't even notice we're doing it. Who touched the apple before you picked it up? Can you imagine how many fresh germs are on the door you open, or the products you might buy? Does your hairdresser stand right over your head? I've lost count how many times I've read or heard someone say, "He/she had no idea how they caught Covid because they always wore a mask." And then the person died. Joanie, scoot over, I rarely leave the house except to go to a drivce through maybe twice a month for something. I do the ordering of groceries online and DH picks them up and gets to stay in the car while the worker load the food. Other than missing my family, I kind of like being home, but I'm a homebody by nature and need my alone time to exist....See Morefunctionthenlook
