ALDI coming to my area
Comments (21)I don't understand why so many people insist on making it the possessive or plural. It's Aldi, pronounced "All D". People don't say "Walmart's", "Target's" or the like. FWIW, it stands for Albrecht Discount. And you don't rent the carts, it's simply a small deposit to encourage people to return the cart. It's funny what people will do for 25¢. It's really an interesting history. Two brothers, whose parents started the Albrecht store and the boys took it over, expanded it and got into a fight on whether to sell cigarettes or not so they essentially split the world in half. They became Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd. You can tell the difference by the logo. And a sister store is known as Trader Joe's. Even though they split up, they still share some things like distributing, purchasing power and the like. I guess your enemy can be your friend when it comes to money! Stores vary on cleanliness like any other chain of store. Most of them in this area are pretty well kept all things considered. Keep in mind the business model is minimal staff. Often it's the manager and one employee running the store in non-packed hours. And they have to check people out, stock the store, clean and do everything else. Those people work hard. I like that it's a small store. It's cripple-compatible in many ways. I can hobble around there and get out in a reasonable time. I don't see many people in there in wheelchairs but the aisles here are plenty wide for them. Most of the stores are comparable sized and laid out much the same. They don't have shelves stacked to the ceilings so I have no trouble reaching things. Some probably will I imagine. Boxes are available if you don't want to bring bags or carry things loose. Of course it'll vary from area to area but around here produce is usually pretty good quality and cheap by comparison. I won't touch produce at Walmart, it's consistently bad but Aldi GENERALLY has much better quality. Ironically, when I first started getting so crippled up, Aldi had canes for $6. That's less than a third of the W store and most any place else. And they are good quality. I bought two to have one as a spare. Little did I realize I would get more crippled and need both. They have special purchases from cookware (and most people are very satisfied with the coated cast iron they have a couple times a year). I've purchased USB drives, lawn chairs and more. I like Aldi. I don't shop there often but I'm glad they're around. And apparently a lot of people like it because they are a very fast-growing chain. Many think it would be in the low income areas only but they seem to do even better in the higher end parts of town. Most people like to save money. It is NOT a store you go to for everything unless you are an unusually basic shopper. But then again, few stores are these days. I find myself having to shop several different places to get what I want. It's a no-frills place and shopped correctly, you can save some money. If you want people to bag your groceries for you, provide bags and wait on you hand and foot, go elsewhere. It's not the Aldi business model....See MoreMy first ALDI experience...
Comments (25)I am a huge fan of Aldi. There are three within 5 miles of my house, and a Trader Joe's, all clean and convenient. There are high end grocers, pick-n-saves, super walmarts, butcher shops, green grocers, bakeries, dairies, all in easy reach of my house. Paradise for a cook like myself, but I buy most of my groceries at Aldi, though not all. They don't have specialty foods, unusual spices, but they do have many delicious, fresh items. They do have carts that don't wobble because they haven't been banged around in a parking lot. They don't supply bags, but the stores in my area all accept debit cards and will give me up to $200 cash back at no charge every time I shop. Twice we have had guests who raved about the delicious meal I prepared with Aldi food when the discussion turned to some guests' refusal to enter an Aldi because they thought Aldi food was substandard or out of date or seconds, etc.. My husband and I looked at each other and kept quiet both times. I certainly had never considered that people would be afraid of Aldi foods or refuse to eat them....See MoreFirst ever microwave drawer with convection oven
Comments (67)I just finished a new home build and also installed a Sharp drawer convection microwave SMD2499FS. I noticed that anything I heated in there never became very hot. Fast forward to trying to make my grandkids hamburgers. Didn’t want to wait for the charcoal grill to heat up so I tried the convection grill function on my Sharp. Followed the directions in the book exactly. Preheat the ceramic cook/drip tray, cook etc. while the burgers came out pretty good, upon cleaning the cook tray I noticed two diagonal cracks in the ceramic. I thought perhaps it was crazing but when I turned it over the cracks went straight through to the other side. The pan did not come apart, but it was concerning to me that this cracked during cooking. I called the customer service number and was told that although my microwave is under warranty for parts and labor, this tray is not considered a part. No one seems to know where I can order a new one, including the high-end appliance store, where I purchased my appliances for my new home. There’s no information on Sharps website for replacement pieces or accessories. I asked to speak with a supervisor when I was on the phone with CS and of course the supervisor was busy, I really wish I read the reviews before I ordered this. I really feel like I made a very expensive mistake. That being said, for those of you who use the convection portion of this microwave, can you use metal pans? I’m trying to think of what else I can use for convection cooking. Stoneware? Pyrex? I saw metal pans on a video. I also read that there’s a lot of sparking and potential fires in this, so I am concerned about using any metal in the microwave other than those racks that come with it. I’m feeling taken advantage of here. This company has the worst customer service....See Moresaw my first EVER today
Comments (16)I have a large ceramic pumpkin that has a light bulb inside. Have had it for many years, in fact the "lid" broke finally so I use a couple of the bigger pieces on top of a green Majorca plate as a lid. ha It's been my tradition to put it in the window on a stand beginning Oct. 1st. and not take it down until after Halloween - stays lit all night. Then I decorate the mailbox cover, but usually try to wait until the third week of Oct. IF I can. A bit of fuss, but I enjoy it. And this year I replaced the light bulb in my porch light with a purple bulb! Last night I turned it on for the first time - very eerie. Shines more of a violet color....See MoreDLM2000-GW
