I made a HUGE mistake. Black Mastic crisis

I grinned down the floor on my concrete slab, and later found out I was grinding black mastic, most likely. I was wearing a mask, and eye wear but I'm scared of health damages and the dust that was created. What do I do now? Help!

Is there any dust left? If so, wet it down enough to stop any fibres from flying in the air and clean it up.

The concerns you would have would be from asbestos. There is a very very very low chance of any health concerns if asbestos was present. To ease your mind, you are welcome to take a small sample and send it to a lab. For $75 - $100 you can find out if you had any exposure.

From now on, you will want to work with dust masks and eye protection should you feel the need for more DIY. Remember: lead based paint was FAR more damaging (when removed) than small amounts of asbestos.

What you do now is not worry.

Even if it does contain asbestos (not a sure thing), one casual exposure like this won't do you any significant harm. The people who suffered asbestos-related illness were those who worked with it 40 or more hours a week for all their working years, especially those in the factories making asbestos products. I've never heard of a single case in which a homeowner was harmed by asbestos in his or her own home.

That doesn't mean you should take chances. As SJ says, treat asbestos containing materials with respect in the future. But for right now you can rest easy, you'll be fine.

If you have any more cutback (the black stuff) to remove from your slab, one approved product to use is called Bean-e-doo (now apparently renamed 500MR Mastic Remover). I've used it. It's messy, but it works. Buy about twice as much as you think you need. Leave it on the floor for as long as you possibly can; a week wouldn't be too long. From what I can tell, it's basically just industrial grade soybean oil, which you may be able to get from an industrial supply house for a lower cost than the approved, branded stuff.

I second pippi21 in thanking all those who added their bloopers that will help newcomers avoid making the same mistakes. I'm mixing my own blend of soil since I got into the game late & couldn't get my hands on anything other than the Miracle Gro Moisture control potting mix. I'm going with 2 parts of it to start mixed with 1 part seed starter, 1 part Perlite, 1 part regular potting mix & fingers crossed. Paint pen labels and a BIG reminder to put them inside the containers before I seal them. Mostly half-gallon milk jugs, about a dozen clear 2-liter seltzer bottles (soldering iron made nice round holes in the bottoms), and about 15 1-gallon milk jugs. Sowing mostly perennial flowers this first time WSing.

How to remove black mastic from hardwood floor?

I have an 1890's that someone had glued 1970's shag carpet to oak hardwood floors. Also had a maple hardwood floor in the kitchen with several layers of linoleum glued down with the black adhesive. After trying sanding, adhesive remover, paint stripper and scraping someone told me the solution that does work! It will sound counterintuitive but you mix a strong solution of TSP cleaner in a bucket of hot water. Then mop this solution onto the floor keeping it wet for 40 min or so. The TSP solution will turn the glue to mud which can be easily scraped off. When nothing else worked, this took care of the problem. If you leave the oak flooring wet too long, it can warp, but I used this method in 3 rooms and then was able to sand and finish and they turned out beautiful. The maple floor cleaned up beautifully as well! Attempting to sand the glue mess off the floor will fill up sandpaper sheets almost immediately - the TSP method works!!

Oooh, that mamadadapaige is so smart! As I was reading through this thread and enjoying every photo my first thought (at the reclaimed encaustics) was "wonderful!" and then I saw your inspiration and I thought "fabulous!" and then I saw your proposed tile and it left me a little flat. My initial thought was that the white and charcoal simply have too much contrast, while the tile colors in your inspiration photo don't contrast too much -- a la Goldilocks, they're "just right." Instead of charcoal / white could you do rust / cream tiles, being really true to the inspiration photo? I think what my eye was drawn to in the inspiration photo was the border, or rather how the border fixed the look, the way a picture sings when it's been appropriately matted and framed. Anyway, mamadadapaige said it much better (and sooner) than I, but I guess I still wanted to say "me too!" You have such incredible materials in that kitchen (that quartersawn oak is so yummy!) -- I'll be looking for more pictures from you.

If your cabinets put off a yellow tone, you need to get rid of that blue first thing. Your blue is much too bright for a yellow toned cream cabinet and together, they'll look awful. I'd go with either the gorgeous blue suggested above (in the bathroom example) which has a green undertone to it, or go with a soft green, but stay away from pastel or violet blues. They clash something awful with yellow tone cream. I'm afraid you did make a mistake, and it's rather a big one (I hate painting trim...mind you, I'd do it in a heart beat in your situation, but I still hate it LOL). White and cream need to be carefully mixed if they're going to work out. The white needs to not have blue undertones (crisp white) but instead needs to lean towards the yellow or pink. Yours looks to be in the crisp blue tones of white, (think snow or iceberg). Ya just can't mix that well with yellow toned ivory or cream. It again clashes just as bad as your blue paint. It needs to be painted again, and in a color matched, but perhaps a shade or two lighter, than the cabinets, if you want a nice flow. Your mistakes aren't hugely expensive, but they are hugely visable if you leave them as is. Even going to a soft green or changing the blue won't fix it. Either the cabs need paint (I wouldn't paint a new factory finish myself) or the trim, and definately the walls!

I read online to spray the air to capture the dust and falls to the floor.. I bought mops and rags but I can't find P100 filters for my respirator. I was thinking about renting a air scrubber to capture particles. I plan on testing as well.

Any other suggestions for cleaning techniques, products, or advice is greatly appreciated. I've been really stressed about this...

Really, you'll be fine. You're far more likely to suffer harm from the stress of worrying about asbestos than from asbestos itself.
