I don't like my fireplace...suggestions?
Comments (17)You could just build a new surround and mantle out of wood and cover the whole darn thing. I had a black-hole inset slate surround and that's what I did. Basically, just built 4 boxes large enough to slip over the existing slate and screwed everything together and to the wall. Then I went nuts with talavera tile and molding. But you could keep it simple and still have a nice surround for a very little bit of money and effort. I don't have any before pics, and again I know you wouldn't like anything like this style-wise, but it was pretty easy to do. The original slate is still behind my wood....See MoreHelp, I don't like my new granite
Comments (27)I agree with others that a different paint color would help. If you're going to put in a backsplash, get rid of the 4" tall one of granite that's there and put in one that goes from th counter clear up to the cabinets. Then the granite color/pattern won't be so much "in your face". We re-did a kitchen in a rental condo and and the guy who put in the granite installed a 4" backsplash. We hated it on first sight, and I think it was because the granite pattern became overwhelming for the space. We ripped it out immediately and installed a tile 6" high backsplash with a mosaic border on top. We didn't want to do tile all the way up to the cabinets. I apologize for my less than stellar mock up skills, but it may give you an idea....See MoreWhite kitchens with dark floors- I don't get it
Comments (53)Wood floors are like jeans. Some prefer a dark rinse, some prefer faded, and some like the regular medium blue denim. I love gray jeans, but they are harder to find. They all work and you don't have to match the color to anything. The very dark wood floors have been more popular the last five years or so. They aren't as warm as lighter floors, but they still look great. They aren't necessary for contrast if you already have white cabinets/black counters, but they are part of a look that many prefer. I chose a medium stain for the floors in my white kitchen with dark counters because they show less dust and look great with the area rug in my great room. The shade is similar to the floors I once had in a Victorian house built in 1895, and it is similar to the floors my friend has in her house built in the 50s. I consider it to be warm and neutral and I can't imagine ever tiring of it....See MoreHelp! I don't like my new bathroom!
Comments (16)I had this flooring in a home. I loved it. First it needed to be sealed because it can stain if it isnt. The sealant would have made it darker too. Your gut was correct in that the ideal grout color would have been the field color of the tile. If you try to "manually" change your grout color I think you will be opening a can of worms and maintenance for the long haul....See MoreG & S Floor Service
