This is kind of off topic of the thread, but sunleafmoon if you had species of plants native to your area planted, then you got natives, grafted or not. The differences you are noticing between the planted natives and the naturally occurring natives in your area are most likely due to their provenance or as you suspect with the Dogwoods, possibly specific cultivars being planted. You can get native species planted on your property, but they could be grown from seed collected in a far off part of that species native range and thus you might notice differences between them and the ones naturally occurring in your area. Cultivars can also originate from seed grown plants from far off areas(to your area) of the species native range or represent extreme forms/mutations of the species. So, it sounds like you wanted local provenance native trees planted, but you probably got non-local provenance native trees planted. It's uncommon(at least here in Eastern Kansas) for locally native tree species found in nurseries to be grown from local provenance trees. Most are shipped in from a wholesale nursery out of state and the wholesaler grows them from seed collected in their local area or they grow them from seed from wholesale seed companies who collect them from who knows where. Smaller local nurseries(I've found most all of these are started by former farmers or people who grew up on a local farm) and local nurseries who specialize in natives seem to grow much more of their trees from local provenance seed sources.

Maureen, I know of no discount codes or coupons for Klehms Nursery and have never heard of them offering any. I have gotten their catalog for several years and have purchased peonies from them but never their clematis. I can say that their peonies were large in size and worth the money and not expensive to ship since you get the soilless tubers when you order peonies. I have heard others rave about their clematis plants as having big root balls and being very large. The downside is that you have to pay shipping charges based on weight and that further adds to the cost of their plants. That is why I like ordering clematis from Dan at Brushwood since shipping is included in their prices or from Chalk Hill since they have gone to the longer but thinner containers which helps in reducing their shipping charges.

True, Daphne require good drainage but they also require adequate moisture to survive. The term "good drainage" doesn't mean dry conditions and these terms can be easily confused. If not given adequate water, well-drained soil can quickly create dry soil. Daphne can't tolerate dry conditions and they can die from lack of moisture in a short amount of time. Perhaps the Daphne 'Briggs Moonlight' mentioned in previous post is thriving because the "extensive drainage problems" were helping it get the required amount of moisture to survive. For the Daphne 'Summer Ice' mentioned above I would suggest getting it out of the greenhouse and planting in the ground in average or better soil and giving it ample amounts of water on a regular basis until established and then normal watering after. If you are going to keep it in the greenhouse, watch out for old flowers staying on the plant and rotting which can lead to disease in stems and then dieback of that stem which sounds like the symptoms you might be having. Greenhouse conditions usually encourage heavy flowering in a high humidity environment, which is not an ideal situation for Daphne. Good luck with your Daphne and we are all hoping it makes it. The Daphne t. 'Summer Ice' is a fairly easy variety to grow and will survive nicely in decent soil with normal care and watering in the landscape. I have three of the 'Summer Ice' in my front yard that have grown very well for years. They produce flowers almost all year for me here in Oregon and are a wonderful addition to the yard. The scent on a warm evening is amazing! I also have 'Lawrence Crocker', genkwa, 'Wilhelm Schacht', odora 'Marginata', X houtteana, jasminea, 'Brigg's Moonlight', 'Napolitana', and Edgewortia c. growing well in my landscape with no special care or soil. I'm also going to be planting other daphnes soon.

I'd dispute the notion that FlowerWorld is a "discount" nursery. Their prices tend to be lower than a lot of other retail nurseries and garden centers because they grow 90% of their own stock. Most other local nurseries are resellers of stock grown by a whole host of area and national wholesale growers. But that also means their selections in many areas will be limited - you will not find many, if any, patented plants available and perennial selections will be mostly the old standbys. Many of the newer and very popular selections of certain trees and shrubs are proprietary and if you don't bring them in from the grower or their licensee, you just don't get them. And although you can find some decent trees there, again look for the standards and not the widest selection of named cultivars. If you've never been, it is well worth a visit just for their annual and houseplant/tropical display alone and it is a great source for standard "bread and butter" plants at a good price but if you are looking for specific named cultivars, less common plants or the latest, hot selling perennial, good luck :-) And the sales help is hard to find if you need any.
