Awakening wants full sun here. It looks pretty and pink in the spring and bleaches to lighter pink alarmist white in summer like Vapor mentioned.

If you would like a bit less fading I would recommend Blossom Time which is from the same New Dawn heritage and has a darker reverse which stays nice and pink giving it more depth.

I hear some people say CPM does not repeat well. Awakening is very pale blush pink.

Blossomtime was not very hardy for me and died. Very lovely though.

How about James Galway? It is pale pink and I hear it is floriferous and good repeat. Mine is new so I can't really say yet.

My CPM is going into her second full year in the ground (fall planted two years ago), and she hasn't done much - I didn't even see a bloom on her last year. She's in one of the worst spots in my yard, heavy clay soil (might be more clay than soil, honestly) and at best part-sun. With full sun and better soil, she may be much, MUCH happier in your yard. In fact, I'd bet on it!

How hot does your section of z6a/b get? I'm in z6a, almost 5b and we still get weeks of upper 90s in the summer, and at least a week if not two of 100+. I don't think there's much that wouldn't fade in those 6ish weeks, but that much heat may also shut some roses down. If this coincides with Japanese beetles in your area, that might be a plus though!

Is your full sun all-day sun, or 6+ hours of morning sun, then indirect or afternoon shade? That might make a difference, but Dianela is farther south than us, so I doubt CPM would fade any more for you than it does for her. Lovely pics, btw, Dianela! I'm going to show my knee-high CPM these, and my shovel, to encourage her to grow, dammit!

I agree with Totoro that James Galways is also very beautiful and delicate, mine are also young so I can’t say more.

AC thank you. Crown princess here took 3 years to really do something also planted in full sun. She seems to be slow to get going compared to other Austins. Hopefully yours will get going very soon.

Agree about Blossomtime, dianela, but totoro I'm sad yours was not hardy. This was the first winter in the ground for mine and it only got to +12F, but was tip hardy and has not had the weird leaves so many other have with the late freezes, probably because it leafs out later. I wonder if there was some other reason your didn't survive as I've seen it growing in Z5 gardens. dianela, yours is glorious. James Galway is also a beauty. I almost ordered that for my friend's garden when Spirit of Freedom sold out, but went with Bathsheba instead.

Oh, Bathsheba! That was on my list! I decided to go for two container roses (Molineux and The Fairy) and Awakening for the climbing rose. Awakening would get morning shade but full, hot sun from about 11/noon on. Summers can get pretty miserable here, with temps sometimes hanging out in the mid-90s for a while, but a good summer would find us mostly in the mid to upper 80s. Dianela, your pictures are gorgeous! I don't mind fading to a pale pink or even cream...I just don't much care for browning. I will give it a lot of babying, because we are definitely prone to drought conditions in summer. I've never had roses before, but I had a German friend who trained New Dawn up the side of her 2 story house. When it was in bloom, it was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen! But I needed something smaller and more tame. :)

In the zone where do you live? Nearest large city? I am not sure Awakening would be much smaller or Tamcamer excuse my voice recognition. That should read less tame ar.. the ferry can get very large also. Just FYI Molino should be quite good in a container. Another Charming Rose in a deeper color is setina. It has smaller flowers that are less fragrant than Awakening but fragrant nonetheless. Did I mention Viking Queen.? Or Dreamland?

That IS gorgeous. Would you believe that I've never, ever planted a rose? At my first house, I held off because I knew I wasn't going to live there for more than a few years...then moved to a mostly-shaded property. Finally I have some sun and can't wait to get my roses! I've always loved the look of white roses too, but am afraid of that fading-to-tan effect in the full, hot sun (Iceberg, etc). Guess I'll have to see how these roses do and go on from there!
