I have Pretty in Pink Eden, it does repeat but not a lot.

Instead of Laguna, have you considered America? It's a workhorse and does well in sun.

Of the roses you mention, Madame Alfred Carriere is the most likely to repeat bloom well. Possibly Kiss Me Kate, which has variable reviews on this forum. The others, not so much repeat, but I don't know about Quick Silver. My experience is in a very different climate than yours, so YMMV. If I remember correctly, Laguna is remarkably thorny, so keep that in mind if it is by a high traffic area. Personally, given the architecture and the space, I would stick with a smaller pot of annuals or nothing at all.

I have seen beautiful pictures of Kiss Me Kate on this forum. Hopefully mine will also be like that . for now mine is small and very slow growing. MAC has been a fast grower and I think the old fashioned blooms matched with its creamy color would be stunning with your building

Not a rose, but the most beautiful climber on a brownstone in Brooklyn is wisteria. It’s simply breathtaking in bloom or even as a skeleton in winter.

noseometer and oursteelers: I will give MAC a try. If it doesn’t work out I will move it to the backyard. I have a pot of lavender there now but since I am getting so many roses for the back yard I am tempted to show off one on the stoop. Also inspired by the Japanese container rose gardens on YouTube like Shiuan’s Garden.

kitasei: yes I saw neighbors with wisteria or climbing hydrangea if their house faces north. A lot of wisteria near us and they look beautiful When in bloom. But i can’t resist roses. They bloom for a much longer time and ...well you all know the rest:) I may also put a short climber in the front garden, either along the fence or against an old gas lamp we have in the little front garden.

I think you should go for it! A rose would look so pretty and rather unexpected.

For me, Pretty in Pink Eden is one of my best roses (out of 350). It has beautiful shiny foliage, blooms all season in flushes (almost continual), and has gorgeous flowers that last on the bush for a very very long time. The only downside to this rose, for me, is its lack of scent.

My Pretty in Pink Eden is very fragrant, even at 95 degrees, and my understanding is that was the goal for the breeder. Are you sure you aren't thinking of Eden?

Diane, your raspberry cream swirl looks so healthy and vigorous! The combination with clematis is beautiful. I was thinking of including a clematis in the mix too.

your Quick Silver has so many buds for such a small plant. I cant wait when my order from Heirloom arrives later this month. I think Heirloom listed Quick Silver as a small climber so I might plant her under the front fence.

I like Sombrueil for quantity of blooms and vigor better than MAC but MAC is thornless and lax and Sombrueil is thorny and stiff.

Also what about Spirit of Freedom? I think that has good Rebloom. kind of hard to get thoug.

Thank you Totoro. Last AugustI saw a white climber at the botanical garden looking good in the heat wave. Folks here said it looked like Sombrueil. It sure looked thorny and stiff in the picture. Your suggestion reminded me of it. Maybe I’ll put one along the back fence in my backyard.

My all time favorite climber is Florentina. It looks healthy all season long, repeats well, with large flowers in clusters. And is tidy and easy to train. I highly highly recommend it

Diane, That RCT is to die for...I killed 2 last yr, picked them up from the clearance rack and they promptly kept dying, i'm tempted to try again...does it have any scent at all?

For a planter, even a large one, not sure if some of the ones mentioned above would be a good choice...MAC for instance, some pictures I have seen indicate it gets crazy big.

Something like brother cadfael, spirit of freedom, lady of shallot etc? not sure of the hardiness etc. Full disclosure, I have have many climbers in planters coz I have a large patio and less space in the ground, but mine are relatively young, so not sure how they will do long term.

Quick Silver is my recommendation. My QS is starting its 3rd. season here, and is covered with buds, soon to open. It has shown to be the most frequent blooming cycle repeater of any climber I know. The flowers are large, sumptuous, abundant, moderately fragrant, long lasting, and packed with petals.

Disease is a non-issue, being an ADR winner. I predict it will get larger than the Arborose designation of 7', as mine has exceeded 9' across, and likely to achieve 12' across, 6' in each direction grown on a fence.

There's just something about a white/blush rose next to that colour brick, and a graceful habit with that style building that says MAC to me, or one of the Noisettes. So charming and your zone would probably accommodate them.

After looking through this post again and the picture of the building I have to agree with Vaporvac. Mac or anything very very light will just look nicer there and set off the beautiful building.

Sadly don’t have a pic — but I grew MAC in a ~bathtub size wooden box on the deck of our old apt in Fort Greene. (North/west facing) It bloomed pretty well for years till an ice storm killed it.

Aerbk: hi neighbor! Heirloom finally shipped my MAC and I am excited to plant it. I am surprised a bathtub sized planter is not enough to winterize it! A couple years ago I lost a rose and a fig tree in planter when we had polar vortex late in the season. Last year I had a sunblaze rose in a 10 gallon, mounded with mulch and leaves for the winter and it survived. But last winter was really mild so I am still not sure if this method worked.

The bathtub sized planter was big enough for years. It was the ice storm - totally icing it and everything over - that did it in. Plus roof decks have worse wind issues...
