Design Dilemma Home Decorating living room

Please help with my living room!!

My living room is driving me crazy! I need help with arranging furniture. I am willing to purchase new furniture pieces if I know they will look good. I just don’t know what to do with the space. I don’t like the fireplace, I feel it is too short and wide, and just overall too heavy. I don’t know if I am ready to change the fireplace yet because it would be a big project. I don’t know what to do with the TV wall. I need help picking out a rug, and some other pieces that would bring some warmth and life to the space. Please any input is appreciated!!

You need color for sure. Love the art over the FP. Use the greens and blues in pillows and a throw, Are you removing the wall to wall?

It's a lovely room and I really like the paint and the white trim. I don't think it's going to take much to give you the warmth you're looking for. A large coffee table (I'd go for glass top with dark metal) will really add to your space, since it will give you a spot on which to bring some textures and colors into the center of the room, as well as a spot to set your coffee mug or wine glass! I'd look for some throw pillows with lots of white or cream (to be bright and light against the sofas) with touches of colors. I don't think the colors need to be exact matches to your rug. Pottery Barn type pillows could be really pretty and bring some life to the space. Many of these could work with your colors. Take a look at the Anna Marie Bird and the Spring Flower Embroidered pillows and the way they mix them (in additional images viewable when you click on each pillow) with other patterns. Might you like something like this look? They are expensive, but there's a 15% off sale for another day or so. Of course you could find a similar look elsewhere (TJ Maxx, Target?). Now that I've suggested this for you, I'm going back to see whether I want to splurge on some of the pillows for my own living room. I also am of the inclination to remove or rotate some of your decorative furnishings. One thing I'd definitely remove is the shawl over the FP as it makes no sense having it there if the FP is actually being used. I agree the sofa and chair cushions are too large--esp. on the chairs where it obscures the carving on the sides. If you want to keep them though at least rotate the stripes to run in the vertical direction as well as the floral cushions to all be in the same direction. I'd prefer to see the chairs grouped more for conversation and have less symmetry. Your most comfortable chairs look to be the ones flanking the tall entertainment center, yet their location has them isolated from the rest. Your room looks large enough to create a separate area for these two chairs to be grouped next to one another with a small table in between condusive for more intimate conversations.

Try the large couch centered across from the window so it has a nice view outside. Slightly angle the love seat next to it facing the other window with a view f the tv placed next to the window but closer to the window not the corner. With just the single recliner on the larger window side facing the tv. Look for an entertainment center at a height you like for viewing tv. I don't like mounting them on a wall because it forces you to keep it in that position that is sometimes mounted to high. I like it standing ON the entertainment center instead so the whole thing can be moved without patching walls if you decide to change your furniture placement.

We have this good size living room, but because of the window placement I'm having a hard time figuring out how to lay out the furniture and what to have as a focal point. We are not much into watching TV, but we know when we have family over that's important for them, so we think we may get a TV for the living room but, not necessarily want a huge one. I have a recliner couch, recliner loveseat and recliner single seat that are arriving today, and they are a good size. We were thinking of adding a medium size entertainment center with electric fireplace, but not sure if it will look good off center in the wall with the window to the side. You have a good start but the only cool color I see in the room is in the artwork. You should try to bring some of that down into the rest of the room. Some pillows with the colors in your room would be a good start.

Add two of something like this with 1 paisley in front of one on the sofa.

Then two of the lumbar pillows in the chair.

Find one more smaller picture to hang over your console, along with the two that are already there. Lower them a bit so the center is at eye height.

I would add a taller plant in the corner to give some visual weight there.

Then add a basket to your mantel and roll up one of your throws to put in there.

Possibility in the future but not right now. I feel I need a rug to add some texture and color to the room. But I dont know how to pick one out

You don't want a rug on top of carpet. It's a tripping hazard and usually too thick. Get color from art, pillows, throws

Your coffee table should be in front of the sofa, not the chairs. And what is behind the chairs and the purpose of it....? The teal or aqua others have suggested would be nice IMO. I would try to lighten the fireplace as soon as possible. Maybe paint it or white wash it. Since your chairs stick out from the wall space, would you consider leaving one chair there and the other one in the corner between the fireplace and TV? Couldn't \watch TV from it, but good for conversation. I like your room now though just needs a little color.
