I use Open Office which is free.

Libre Office. It is free. It is very much like Microsoft Word.

Try typing it as a message to yourself in your email. Depending on your email once it has been received and opened at the top should be a printer icon. Send to the printer. I have had to print things out from email several times.

You may find that the whole message including headers print rather than just the message itself. If that happens you do need a new program.

Since you don't need an elaborate one try the included Notepad on Windows.

I should explain more. It saves as a document. Then you can print it or email it.

Then give a look at Google Docs, it might be a simple solution for you. There may be other ways to do it but I access it after a gmail signin.

I've been using WordPerfect since 1990, so that's my favorite. But it's expensive. So I would recommend Libre Office--it's very much like Word or WordPerfect, and it's free.

Elmer, the OP did say, nothing elaborate, Notepad isn't elaborate and can be useful to most people who want to type a note, print it or email. Pretty elementary and all that is needed from time to time.

OK, so I downloaded LibreOffice (no ads) and of all things they have a problem with spell check that goes back years!!!! Well I guess you get what you pay for. I am giving it a week to figure out how to work around what ever the issue is and then will dump and start over. My desk top which is older than god is where I have to go to do anything beyond super simple at the moment but that computer is on borrowed time. I cant spell for spit and once something is written down it looks fine to me (Look/say) I need spell check. Thanks for the help. I know Google Docs is supposed to be good but why are they keeping my documents for free? So generous, so kind. I would prefer something not in the cloud. These are the questions I have been asking myself since I got this laptop. Since we enabled the printer to pick up documents off the home Wifi so I can print from this thing from my chair (no cable) I have gone back and forth about a program.

Michael, I've found Notepad to be a quirky and too basic program that I think isn't useful. Wordpad is a notch or two up capability wise, is more reliable but still is basic. If you think differently, fine.

I've been using OpenOffice for many years and like it a lot. The spell check works just fine, and I believe you can change languages, although I haven't really checked that out, even though I do have documents in German and Italian.

I too have used Open office for many years. Works great for what I need.

I will give open office a try. It gets good ratings. I don't need to jump through hoops.
