I love your choices, and second the idea of adding some black trim in the white. I think that it would be amazing. Are you thinking of crackle tile in the shower? If so, double-check if that is ok. I a have crackle finish backsplash in my kitchen and the manufacturer recommended sealing the tile to prevent any stains from food splashes seeping in through the cracks. That makes me think that it might not be a great option for a wet installation like a shower. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than I am can chime in.

Maximize the space by choosing a good vanity w/storage, and possibly building a niche into the wall for additional storage. (use the area between the studs as a built in cabinet) using a prefab shower is fine, but pick a decent one as opposed to those flimsy acrylic pieces. you don't say want the resale value is, so i have no way of knowing how much you should invest. You say you bought mid-range, but I don't know what else you need to redo. anything under a 15% profit really isn't worth it. as for fitting it over the existing drains, usually you will need the new drain cover. if the drain needs to come up, there are extensions. I would advise your husband to do some research on how to fit those into an existing bathroom. If he's handy and can build his own slope, mortar bed and waterproof the shower, then he could prob tile it himself. Just depends on how much work you want to do and what the return is on what you choose. by the looks of what you have there currently, you may have some water damage underneath all the mess. Tear out what you can and then determine what you need to do.

We had a really bad experience with Merola's hex tiles, so I wouldn't recommend them. The batch we had were really poor quality and all improperly set on the mesh--our tiler finally refused to continue with them when they kept shattering when cut and he was constantly having to pull them off to reset them. We replaced them with a similar tile from a local tile shop that ended up costing about the same for the project since they sold it by the square foot, while Merola is sold by the case. So while I like that pattern, I'd look around for other makers of it, even if the initial cost per square foot might look higher. Especially if you plan to tile it yourself, you will get that cost back in not having to reset everything a million times. For the medicine cabinet, I'd look for something similar just without the side lights, and recessed. There are a bunch out there with the same general mid-century aesthetic--then you can wire sconces on the side instead of the attached lights and have better overall lighting while keeping the general look/feel of the era.
