Need suggestions to improve exterior of house
Comments (4)Your house, a mid-century ranch, has once again become a very desireable and fashionable style. It wouldn't take much to spruce yours up and make it look fresh. The first thing I'd think about is paint. The all-white look makes your house appear boring and a bit dead. Some colour would definitely give your house a lift. Why not think about a warm grey shade, or perhaps an adobe colour for the main body of the house with a very dark brown on the roof trim. Those colours would work well with the brick and add some definition. The dark paint along the roof would play up the roof angles and add some linear definition. The brick veneer is in keeping with the style of the house, and also appropriate to its period. I'd think carefully before deciding to remove it. The metal framed windows, while lacking much character or depth, are also appropriate to the house. If you need to replace them, I'd look for similar metal-framed windows in either a horizontal sliding configuration or casements. Vinyl windows aren't really appropriate to the style or period of the house. The next thing I'd do is work on the landscaping. Get rid of the tall jungle at the front. You really want to accentuate the horizontal. Low-growing swaths of shrubs and ground cover with a strategically placed multi-trunked tree or small grouping of trees (think palms, perhaps -- or something else with interesting branching) to provide a pleasant asymetrical balance might be good. While the circular drive was probably fashionable at the time your house was built, they are no longer in vogue. I'd think about jack-hammering it up and replacing it with a simple drive (perhaps exposed aggregate concrete) to the garage and some sort of landscaping. Play up the mid-century styling of your house. Don't try to change it to something it's not. Simple clean lines are the key. You might want to look for a few books specializing in this genre of house. There are a number out there. Your house has a strong resemblance to the Eichler style. There quite a few books on Eichler homes. You might also want to look at the link below for book available from Amazon on Ranch houses. You may find inspiration amongst its pages. Comments (2)Generally speaking, there are too many focal point on the house right now so I think you need to tone some things down. Here's some ideas: I love metal stars but I think there is a better place to put it. Take it down and paint the accent boards above the garage (that "box" above the garage door) the same color as the body of the house. Change the garage doors to something less busy. A nice wood look door might be the trick. I prefer the one without windows but both are nice. I love your brick! Please don't paint it. I had similar brick on a house once and greens went really well with it. I don't have the skills to render different colors on your house, but hopefully someone who can will jump in...See MoreImprove exterior of a half Spanish style home
Comments (11)this isn't a spanish style home. you have some arches on the back addtion part. that's it. I mean, it's like walking around w/castanets on your fingers while wearing blue jeans and a tshirt, and calling yourself a flamenco dancer. no offense. If you want more spanish, get a spanish roof tile, get new windows for the front part, spanish style door, and a mediterranea landscape. see how they did this look? or this one. you'd have to stain that concrete driveway too But aside from that, I'd just go w/the vintage mid century look. Like this one: (is this home up in the north part of LA? montecito hgts? Lincoln park area? looks like it. ) First thing I'd do is paint. from the pic it looks like a greenish white. why do you want fencing on top of the wall? Have you checked w/the city first to see if it's allowed? if it is, ask about the spacing of the fencing. sometimes you need a gap in between the planks. If you must do fencing, then make it this style: I'd paint the cinder block wall a darker color and then do your vinyl wood look fencing on top of that. I'd paint the lower portion a dark charcoal, and do a warm, horizontal wood-look plank on top paint your stucco and trim a more modern color that works w/the wood tone I love the dark and white w/the wood...See MoreNeed help to improve the exterior (siding and brick) and curb appeal.
Comments (8)Assuming the windows can't be painted, the challenge I see is to integrate their brighter white with the pink-ier white (in the photo, at least) of the brick. What about a soft, pearly gray for the siding? I'd keep the shutters and actually add more; they (1) provide an opportunity to repeat the brick color against the siding and the siding color against the brick, integrating the parts of the house, and (2) could cover the obvious infill panels beside the two lower windows. Do you know if the brick of the column is structural or just veneer? If possible, I think stopping the brick at the line of the lower window edges and using painted wood above looks better than a straight brick column with no detail. A widened walkway, lines of evergreens to "ground" the house, a couple of tall deciduous shrubs where there are no windows, and a clean and simple entry area finish off this makeover option....See Morehoussaon
