Long and spindly means not enough light. You need to boost the light level or hours of light this plant is getting. This seems to be a bad year for dionaea in this area and some others. Not enough light and too much rain. If I don't bring mine in on some days they will rot because of the rain and lower temps and just plain overcast we've been getting this year.

LOL! Deja vu! Anyhoo, those mini-terrariums are more cute and decoartive than they are useful. You have the right idea about putting them on the porch. VFT's do best when kept outside. They are real light lovers. but going from a cube to direct sun in one day would be too much for them. Keeping them on the porch, in "bright shade" (indirect light) for a week, for acclimation, is the way to go. They need air circulation, so the plastic cover needs to go. They need drainage, so they need to be repotted. Hold the contents upside down, over your hand, and coax the whole thing, plant and soil to come out as one unit and place in a bigger, drained pot. Fill in with LFS, which is long fribre sphagnum, which can be purchased at Lowes or Home Depot. Sit the pot in a plastic container of water. Below is an pictoral illustration. Pretend that these are VFT's.

If they could be grown in plain dirt then we wouldn't have to spend the money on sphagnum moss and perlite/silica sand. There are trace amounts of nutrients and minerals in that plain dirt that will kill your plants. Every time you water those minerals are going to leach into your sphagnum so now it's contaminated too. Where are you located in CA and where did the plants come from? If they are going dormant it might be a good idea to bare root them and stick them in the frige. Whatever you do you need to get them out of the dirt. To tell if you are over watering tip the pot on one side and if water runs out then you are over watering. If no water runs out and the soil is moist then your doin good. Never let the soil dry out completely. These plants need to be outside to receive the signals to go dormant. You can leave them out until temps drop to the lower 30s then unpot them and put if frige. You could leave them out in the pot if it doesn't get too cold there.

Those are little babies. My most prolific Venuse fly trap is one that came in a kit from Walmart. It has made dozens of divisions over the many years that I have had it. The pitcher plant and venus fly trap need sunshine, rain water or bottled pure water not tap water and a dormant time to rest in the winter. If you do not have hard freezes, they can stay outdoors all winter. The potting soil that works best for me is a half peat/half perlite mix that I get very soggy with rain water. The venus fly traps i put in a pot with a drain hole and then place in a bowl with water up to half way up the pot. The pitcher plant can have water higher. It is fun to have the carniverous plants close by to watch them. I give a lot of carniverous plants away to kids, but only after they can pass a test for caring for them.
