Upholstering a headboard question
Comments (1)You need to sew the pieces together, just like you would with wide draperies. You use the 54" in the middle, and sew a piece on each edge. If you match the pattern, the seams are not very visible. Trim back the selvages, press back a seam allowance and lay it over the center panel matching the patterns. I use Dritz wash away wonder tape to hold the pieces together, but reinforce with pins before I move everything to the sewing machine....See MoreThinking about adding upholstered chairs in the DR
Comments (10)Thanks, may flowers! All very good suggestions! It is just the photo angle that makes the chandelier look like its hung a little too close to the window. It is not EXACTLY centered on the wall with the botanicals, but it is off by only 4 inches. There is 28" between the backs of the chairs and the window wall. You are right about the problem with where to stop the paint. I've always wanted to be able to paint the DR a different color, but in this house, the paint has to be the same in the LR, DR, hall and even part of the entry. I have thought about a rug, but I kinda like the contrast between the lighter color of the floor and the darker wood in the table and chairs. Also, most of the time when we use this table, it is expanded and it would be half on the rug and half off. But, IF I added a rug, do you have any suggestions? I agree with your idea of changing the drapes. I don't know if you've been following KevinMP's threads on his DR, but I just realized that something like the drapes he replaced might be just what I need. They appeared to be a similar color to what I have now, but they also had some black in them. OR......maybe I could add some kind of trim with black, green and gold to the leading edge of the drapes....See MoreHow would you upholster this chair
Comments (19)Get lots of recommendations, perhaps ask at a reputable fabric store - I've seen Calico Corners mentioned on other threads as a good place to find competent folk to do the reupholstering. I had a very distressing and expensive experience using someone who had done good work for a friend. Turned out one recommendation was not enough. I have learned a lot since then about what I should have asked, such as: how they will handle rebuilding the furniture? what type of seams will they use? I suggest spending time online looking at how chairs are assembled and what makes a good chair so that you can ask good questions. Don't assume that because an upholster knows how to upholster one type of furniture she or he knows how to do it all. I think you have the basis for a beautiful chair. I'm in the camp that suggests looking at fabric rather than leather....See MoreRe-upholstering: Here's a challenging question..
Comments (3)You can't find that upholsterer because it costs tons of money and most customers snort at us and say "I could get 2 new chairs for that price!". Yes, you can. For a really good seat, the chair base has eight-way tied springs, and then a down-cotton wrapped spring unit in the seat. This is massive re-upholstery. It takes hours to tie the deck springs. It takes hours more to construct a spring cushion. You can certainly find an upholsterer to do this, if you look long enough. I do it often. I never advertise anymore, because I don't need to. Ask at a local upholstery supply store. I don't do it much anymore, because no-one is willing to pay the price. They quail at the price of foam cushions! Many expect the price of RE-upholstery to be less than new furniture. It's not. We have to spend hours stripping the old crap off, sneezing and coughing from the dust, old food crumbs, the occasional dentures, vacuuming up the old staples and tacks, disposing of old stuffing and fabric (garbage cost here). Good upholsterers do not work for minimum wage. Many hours go into each piece, and it costs far more than a new piece. I think you need to look a bit further up than Calico Corners for an upholsterer....See MoreCatherine Belaski
