Comments (7)Can you post photos? It's a little difficult to tell from your description just how severe the damage was and that will determine what your course of action should be going forward. Remedial pruning of a grossly mispruned J. maple is a tricky business.....they may never regain their former appearance. FWIW, depending on cultivar, $300 for a mature JM is very conservative :-) I've seen them go for as much as multiple thousands. And going forward, I'd make sure your dad was politely instructed NOT to undertake any more yard work without your express permission and direction....See MoreJapanese Beetles - Any way to get these off of my Crimson Maple?
Comments (3)You could try an insecticidal soap spray, but most other things that you can spray are also harmful (broad spectrum poisons) to many others. Insecticidal soap can be made by mixing 1 teaspoon of a good and real soap (Ivory and Fels Naptha are two that come to mind), not a detergent, in 1 quart of water. This mixture must contact the target insect to be effective and looses its effectiveness when it dries....See MoreAny hope my green mountain maple will bud out next spring?
Comments (6)With proper watering your tree should come back out. If it doesn't live, go with a smaller specimen next time. Comments (2)It also depends on what potting mix it is in, what size pot, and how long it has been in the pot. Have you potted up or preferrably root pruned it lately? Best way (without meters and what not) is to lift the pot and feel it's weight. Water it well and lift it again to compare. Get used to how much it weighs before and after watering and use that to gauge your watering schedule. Sounds like it may have gotten a bit dry. If your potting mix contains a lot of peat, make sure your potting mix hasn't become water resistant (Hygrophobic) If you water and the pot still feels kind of light, the water might be running through a channel and right through without saturating all of the substrate. If so put it in a bucket of water for a few minutes until it feels weighted properly....See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
