Any hope my green mountain maple will bud out next spring?

And if so, can it thrive? It has been very dry and relatively hot for SE WI. Leaf wilting and burning started 3 weeks ago. Started with about 50% of the leaves and progressed to it all. Was planted this spring just before it budded. Have kept watering and will continue to if it can be revived.

Big transplant.

No doubt some time, money and effort went into that.

If you scrape some bark off an undesireably placed branch is it still green and alive?

When leaves turn yellow and brown and fall, there's hope, but when they cling to the tree not so much. It doesn't bode well. Is there a ring of bark missing just above the root collar?

Possibly the blackening is bacterial. What the bugs might be doing depends on what they are. Next, if you are going to do anything about either you need to find out what, exactly they are. If you are used to hiring an expert to come and have a look, then do that.

Thanks for the reply. I need to take a pic of where I seeded in my adjacent neighbors yard (had to regrade part of his yard due to standing water between yards). I seeded it in spring. No irrigation of it. It looks green. My neighbor said he didnt need to irrigate as it rained regularly Looking around at neighbors who dont irrigate, their lawns are green So in short, no supplemental irrigation but may have had lots of rain My house faces north and gets east sun, . Overhead sun and some west sun. No. Deep shade. Im zone 7b/8a. Right now too hot to seed Typically, late Sept to mid Oct is when they seed here. I asked a neighbor this evening and he said the mower did cut it really short in July So, how can I determine if diseased? And if so, what do I need to do before starting over with new seed?

Not a lot of hope, no :-( All named forms of JM's are grafted and that growth you see at the base is coming from the root stock, not the upper 'Red Select' portion. It will never develop into a regular "tree" . I might wait a while to see if the scion (upper portion) does anything. But I wouldn't bet on it this late in the season. I can't see the buds very clearly in the photo, even enlarged, but examining them could confirm one way or the other. If dry and brown or missing altogether, not a good sign. They should be plump, firm and well colored. And honestly, in your zone any existing buds should have leafed out by now.

Down here by the cities, it seems very localized the damage (frost pockets). What I have seen damage too is Smoketree, Red Oak, American linden, Korean/Japanese maples and their hybrids. Thats all that's obvious at moment. I think those coldest spots got 26-28 degrees Saturday morning and 28-30 degrees this morning. Shrub perennial damage seems more widespread in those same spots. The first couple of feet above the ground must have gotten quite cold. There are shrubs toasted around the base but fine on top.

Haven't done a scratch test yet. Will do so today. No bark is missing from the trunk, the bottom just doesn't have lichen on it due to ribbons being tied there.

With proper watering your tree should come back out. If it doesn't live, go with a smaller specimen next time. See link on proper tree/shrub planting below
