rooftop deck furniture layout

Hello all! I just moved and I’m struggling to figure out the best furniture layout for my rooftop deck. The deck needs to be redone so I’m planning that and trying to create a general plan for the space and decide if I should add anything etc. I’d love to hear some ideas! (Starting from scratch furniture wise)

Where do you walk out onto the roof from? Zoomed in but couldn't find a door. The first thing I would do is build a 6' fence around the HVAC system area to hide it and install the a gate/door in it for access to the area for maintenance.

Perfect, makes sense now. Looking around at my neighbors to see what they are doing since 2 are building decks right now. One is running 2x4 stringers flat sitting on little pink foam pads and the other is setting crazy thick stone tiles on bison deck supports. Your way sounds the most solid, though. For screws, do I need to go with 1 5/8" SS screws? I'd like to use the brown headcotes because the smartbit looks pretty idiotproof for a guy like me, but I understand that these are only in 2 1/2" lengths? I'm worried about screwing into the roof with the 2 1/2" screws at the lower spots. Then again I'm worried that the 1 5/8" might not be long enough if I end up going with 5/4 ipe (plus I'd have to use 2 bits for the drill/countersink unless theres some other tool out there). 2" seems like it would be perfect but I've never seen the pros on here discussing any 2" SS screws. Any recommendations? I don't want to plug, just facescrew flush with colored screw heads to blend in.

For privacy on the neighbour side, think down instead of up! You can add hanging baskets with trailing flowering vines that will disrupt the view enough. Your neighbours might like the idea so much that they do the same, and you'll have double the screening! For the layout, I would put the grill over by the railing on the brick wall with a counter next to it between the door and grill. Are there small kids in your life? If not, an L shaped sectional with one leg on the view side and the other extending toward the door (leaving 3-4 ft behind it for access to the stairs) would be a nice way to enclose the fireplace while still allowing good views and some seperation from neighbours. Add a chair in the corner to the left of the fireplace. That will give the cook a place to sit and relax and visit between burger flips :)

Thank you Kate. Some quick questions

1. What part of the country is this in?

2. Is heat a factor?

3. Do you have existing patio pieces you want to use?

what types of activities are you wanting to use the space for? Sun bathing? Outdoor Dining? Entertaining? Gardening? Games like Corn Hole etc.? Grilling?

4. How many people are likely to be using the space?

5. Do you need shade?

6. Is there water?

7. Is this a rental? What types of changes are you able to make? Example I suggested camouflaging the HVAC unit area with a fence. Is this something you can do ?

9. Is there a view from all sides or any area you don't want to see? Any direction you want to showcase?

Hi, thanks for the response.
1. this is in Midwest, USA- so it will be used most March-November.
  3.I have a grill, a small bistro set and love seat.
  I have a dog so I want to keep the green turf area pretty open, would like to have space to sun bath, outdoor dining, and entertaining. My boyfriend wants to put a gas fire pit up there.
2. 2 people + 1 dog will be using it regularly. When entertaining up to maybe 10 people.
3. There’s a pergola up there, so I plan on getting a canopy for it
4. There’s a hose up there if that is what you mean
5. I own this, I think the fence is a good idea!

Kate last thing can you take pictures of the area while standing on the roof? Can the pergola me moved (is it free standing?) What are the things ive circled?
