Tell about your pleasant rose surprises
I know it’s still early in the season, but are there any roses in particular that you are excited about because they look like they are going to do so much better than you anticipated?
Two of mine are Lavender Lassie and Crazy Love.
Last year, Lavender Lassie was such a disappointment. The bush was scraggly looking and the few blooms it had were about half the size they should have been, maybe it was just getting established in its second season. It looks so good right now, and the first two blooms opened, they’re lovely and fragrant! So anxious to see this one in full bloom.
I think I’ve had Crazy Love for four seasons. It was planted in the ground in 2018. I’ve liked it, but I didn’t think it was doing quite as good as it should, but it looks very healthy right now and will be blooming soon.
It has several of these clusters, that’s what I’ve been waiting for!

4 years agoAll winter I’ve been regretting buying Aloha since an HT would be out of place in my garden of mostly Austin’s. The first bloom has opened, and I don’t know how it will do the rest of the season, but I’m impressed with it. I love the color and the fragrance.

Comments (8)Well, I have quite a lot of them. But these will be my favorites: ABRACADABRA - I love this rose. Almost lost it a couple yrs ago. It's stayed fairly small, about 2ft x 2ft. Still struggling, but hangin' in there. ANNE MORROW LINDBERGH - a real beauty. Grows to about 3-4ft x 2ft. Love the blooms. The colors change with each blooming. BILL WARRINER - a wonderful peachy-pink floribunda that blooms almost nonstop. I love the hint of yellow at the base. Makes it glow. Mine's about 4ft x 3ft. BUTTERSCOTCH CL - Probably my all-time favorite rose, just because it introduced me to the class of what I call the "oddball" roses. The browns, tans, greys, etc. Love it! Unfortunately over the yrs, it's not bloomed as often as I'd like. But I still enjoy it when it does bloom. If I don't keep it toned down, it will reach around 12ft or more. FASCINATION - I love the blending of peach, apricot, orange, salmon and pink on this one. It's one of my oldest roses and a few yrs ago it died back to the bud union. But it came back very nicely and has been fine ever since. It grows about 5ft x 3ft. SPELLCASTER - One of my favorite purples. I love the huge spirals. It's a shame this one is out of circulation. It blooms a lot and is just so beautiful. The plant averages about 4ft x 2ft. SPIRIT OF GLASNOST - Got this one many yrs ago from a guy who lurked on the Forums. We traded a lot of cuttings for several yrs. That was back when I had better luck rooting the cuttings. It's a beautiful rose, not in commerce any more. Kinda stingy tho, which might be one reason why. It stays about 3ft x 2ft. SPIRIT OF PEACE - another rare one. Almost lost it a few yrs ago, but luckily didn't lose it in the septic tank dig-up. In fact it's more happy in its new spot than it ever was in the old one. Love the colors! It obviously is susceptible to thrips tho. Right now it's about 2 1/2ft x 2ft. SUMMER FASHION - One of the best bloomers. Almost always in bloom with singles or clusters of these wonderful bicolor blooms. Stays pretty small, about 2ft x 2ft. TOURNAMENT OF ROSES - another of my oldest roses. I love the big almost-ruffled blooms and the darker reverse. Over the yrs it's gotten kinda stingy. Probably needs more fertilizing. Comments (9)Thank you everyone, I agree English Perfume is lovely! Moses, as far as I know EP is only available own root. I got mine from Roses Unlimited. It being own root has not hindered bloom size at all from what I can tell. This is its first year, the bush is still on the small side, I do have it in a small pot though. It has bloomed in regular flushes all season long, seems to have decent repeat bloom so far. It lasts good on the bush and in the vase because the ruffled petals have good substance I would guess that it is somewhat tender, but I'm not certain about that....See Moresubk3
4 years agoMother of Pearl, one of my very best roses, has ginormous blooms this year. What is so surprising is I didn't think she could please me more than she already has!

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoMy order from palantine included many roses I had never heard of but just wanted to try. Pirouette is my favorite of the bunch ! It’s so nice and low thorn . The blooms last a while on the shrub . The color is so beautiful to me !!

Sub k and carol , mother of pearl is wonderful!! I so wish it had fragrance. Boy would it be remarkable then
noseometer , is there a regular aloha and a climber aloha? I’ve had the climber. Actually it came from subk3 garden !! Lol it was very pretty. I had to pair it with a clematis to accessorize the climber legs 😂

4 years agoLilyfinch, Pirouette is a gorgeous rose, I love yours! Thank you Lilyfinch, Vaporvac and Diane. My Lavender Lassie looks good, but the wind has kind of played havoc with it, but I think it will be okay! For the most part my roses are looking great, we’ve had just about the right amount of rain so far. Just in the past couple of days my yard is beginning to look pretty colorful. My plants are doing good, I just need to get the hardening off completed, I sowed some seeds directly in the ground, they’re doing pretty good. Diane, I hope the remainder of your snaps do good, that’s a beautiful variety! I’ve been wondering when you’ll have roses? I think I like Zaide better every year, it’s a great rose. Believe me, I’ve had more than my share of unpleasant rose surprises!
